Sometimes I post scanned images and ask for grade opinions. Just so you all know how horrible my scanned images really are, check out this grade. I recently received the notice from PCGS on this 1878-P 7/8 tail feather VAM 41B. It made MS63 DMPL. The mirrors are incredible. It's my first DMPL Morgan.
Okay - now that explains the other coin. Scans are not good for DMPL coins or Morgans in general. Scans seem to suck the life right out of a coin.
Easy to fix that, just place the coin in a clear holder. Then when you scan, put something about 1/4 inch thick under the edge of the holder and then scan it. That slight angle will allow to scanner to pick up luster, color, cameo contrast - anything you can get with a camera.
Thanks Doug. I'll give it a try when the coin comes back from PCGS. I'm guessing it should work slabbed. I think you gave me this tip once before, but I'm losing my memory as fast as my hair.
At least you still have hair. The real reason is I thought you got glare off the slab when you did this? I can't say for sure, since I stopped scanning several years ago.
Looks like it has a scratch on top To me the scan looks like it has a scratch above the "States" but maybe its the scan, color looks great.
