Which US paper currency first included the words "In God We Trust"? I believe that the first coin that included the motto IGWT was the two cent piece. My son needs this information at school. I'd like to give him your answers & my Friedberg book. Thanks & very best regards, collect89
I believe (am 99% sure) it was one of the major changes made on the series 1963 note. I've done a few online searches and know it's not on the series 1950E's and is on the series 1963. But, I am at my parents house right now and my books are back at my apartment...I won't be there until tomorrow. But, I am almost certain it was added to the series 1963 notes.
Depends on the type of note - Silver certs had the motto on series 1935G, and Federal reserve banknotes had the motto on series 1957A notes. Keep in mind, that the Series Year is NOT the year of issue in these cases. - The series year was the date the overall year of the design was authorized, with the letter following the year denoting minor changes, such as signatures. This changed in 1974 and now each new Secretary of the Treasury new signature) changes the series year. If I'm correct, the 1935 G Silver Certs were issued in 1961/2 and the Federal Reserve notes of 1957A were issued in 1962/3. Here's the link to your answer: http://www.treas.gov/education/fact-sheets/currency/in-god-we-trust.html Hope this helps!
The first notes printed with the motto were the 1957 $1 silver certificates, which were first issued in the fall of 1957. The earliest-dated notes with the motto were some of the 1935G $1 silver certificates, but in that case the with-motto version wasn't actually printed until the spring of 1962. The $1 Federal Reserve Note didn't exist until Series 1963. They went to press in late 1963, and all of them have the motto. The $2 and $5 USNs and the $5, $10, and $20 FRNs first got the motto in 1964; all of these had a series date of 1963. The $50 and $100 FRNs with the motto were first printed in 1966, dated 1963A (there are no Series 1963 notes of these two denominations). The last notes printed *without* the motto were some 1950E $10's; the last run from the old printing plates was in the fall of 1968, eleven years and one week after the $1's with the motto began to be printed. If your son's schoolteacher is into trick questions, there's also the 1886 $5 silver certificate, which sort of has "In God We Trust" on it. The back design of this note shows five silver dollars, and these silver dollars do, of course, carry the motto. The five coins are shown partially overlapping in a stack--the complete motto isn't visible on any one of them, but all the words are there someplace....
