Coin 4, I think a couple of those don't deserve MS66 grades... that and I think that at least 1 or of my GSA dollars are off to NGC.
I think the pictures are exagerating a lot of smll rubs to look like hits , also people are saying that the tpgs are getting lax , I wonder when these were graded and doubt they were all slabbed recently . rzage
I chose #2 and #4 as the CAC coins. I feel that all the coins meet today's TPG criteria for MS66 because they are clean strikes with minimal marks. #2 however appears to have more eye appeal because it has proof like features. This doesn't make it a higher grade coin, but makes it a little nicer. So, I'd think CAC would sticker that one. #4 appears to be the cleanest of the coins. I feel like it has the fewest distracting marks and is really a blast white color. I'd imagine the luster is very strong in hand. So, I picked that one too.
Frankly I can't tell a 65 from a 66. For contest purposes I just accepted the stated grade. Under this condition, Coins 4 and 1 would have been the ones I would have purchased out of the group.
Doug, You know I respect your opinion about grading, but no way any of these coins is a 64. The photos are large and overexposed and many of what look like bag marks are luster grazes. All of these coins are solid 65's and I don't really have a problem with any of them being in a 66 holder. Just my opinion. As far as which ones got the sticker, well, I know the answer which kinda ruins the fun for me. However, I will say that I am not convinced that some of the ones that don't have a sticker were ever sent to the CAC. I will post the answers on Turkey Day. Enjoy the CAC, I mean football games.
and why would you trust cac and not any other tpg? you dont by coins on tpg trust you buy them if you can grade them otherwise its just money wasted but the coin not the sticker or the holder
the whole ocgs/ngc and cac stuff is just downright nonsense. and cac is the worst because they indirectly supoort ngc and pcgs
It really depends on the grade. All of those could have a sticker if they were in low grade holders. Oh, I see ms 66. I chose #4. that is one really nice coin.
Spock , if I see a coin I really like on the internet all I have to go on is the picture 1. which could be off , 2. the tpgs grade , and CAC which is a 3rd set of eyes saying the coin is solid for the grade or high for the grade , considering the price is already set and I;m willing to pay that amount the question is are the pictures giving a fair portrait of the coin , 1. which is rarely the case , 2. is the coin solid or high for the grade which I can't tell because I don't have the coin in hand , 3 CAC which I happen to trust letting me know it is . rzage
I don't think this is going to make anybody happy, I really don't. But here are the results. I honestly thought that Coin 2 would get more votes and we should recognize rlmcents for the only one who picked coin 5. Here are the slab photos. Coin 1 Coin 2 Coin 3 Coin 4 Coin 5 If this thread has proved anything, it is that you really can't judge a coin from a photograph and that the concept of the CAC is necessary to provide a safe way to buy coins sight unseen using only photos. Paul
I'm really surprised that coin #4 wasn't stickered. I feel that coin #2 was because it has what appear to be slightly proof like fields that aren't enough to be denoted on the slab. Although it isn't enough to make the coin a graded "PL" it does add eye appeal and make it above average for the grade. But I felt coin #4 was cleaner than the rest so I am certainly surprised by that. If anyone could provide a thought as to why coin #5 is a nicer example than the others...I would be interested in hearing it, because I honestly can't see it.
I think the same thing could be said about TPGs in general. There are raw coins out there that are just as nice and nicer than these.
Have to disagree with the second part. Your conclusion is based on a faulty assumption - that being that the TPG's and/or CAC are always correct. They aren't.
If this thread has proved anything, it is that you really can't judge a coin from a photograph and that the concept of the CAC is necessary to provide a safe way to buy coins sight unseen using only photos. Paul[/quote] OR we could all be REAL collectors and go to local stores and shows and form our own opinions on what we think each coin is worth. Not pay a FPG service to do it for us AND trust they made the right decision. FPG = 4th party grading service. (I can't believe we've gotten this far).
I already stated that I do not have the opportunity to attend major shows and need the internet in order to purchase coins using photos. The CAC aids me when I make big ticket purchases sight unseen. Don't take this the wrong way, but IMO, most collectors overestimate their grading abilities and if they blindly accepted the TPG's opinions on every coin they would be no worse off than they would trying to recover from the mistakes they made using their personal grading abilities. To summarize that, most collectors don't have a shot in hell to grade coins better than the professional graders at NGC & PCGS so accepting their opinion is not always a bad thing.
