Has anyone brought this up yet? I've even heard from quite a few non-collectors about this coin.

Which one are you planning to get? There is a base metal version which can be had at face, a first day issue (base metal too) which costs about €10, and a silver piece which is more than €30.

I wonder whether the times of getting silver collector coins at face in NL are over. Next year the Netherlands will issue collector coins dedicated to "400 years Manhattan". We'll see what the issue policy for those will be ...

Don't really know about US prices for EU coins, but that sounds OK to me. When the silver piece came out, the Dutch Mint charged €30.95 for the coin. Which according to current rates is almost exactly $40. Maybe others who have bought (or intend to buy) the coin elsewhere are more familiar with how much US dealers charge for the silver piece ...

OK - I just picked one up. I really like it and think it is special.

I know have more foreign non-Israeli coins than I thought I'd ever own. I was tempted to get the Rembrandt as well.

The Rembrandt coin I like too. That one you could even get at face in NL, in silver. Pity they don't do that any more ...

Until and including 2007, the Dutch mint issued those silver coins (in unc) at face value while proof pieces would cost more. This year's coin however is a silver plated copper piece (if you want it at face) or a larger silver coin (if you pay more). Don't know whether this is a one-time thing or a policy change ...

So the are essentially putting into circulation silver coins? In the US people would go crazy.
