OK everyone, I am looking for a good reference book about Morgan Dollars. There was one that was recommend to me a while back that is quite large, out of print, and hard to find. I can't remember what it was. I'm not sure what is out there so any advice on what a good choice would be is appreciated. I don't want to buy something that ends up being junk. Thanks!
I don't know of any books but here's a website that is full of info. You may know about it already but for other's here it is.. http://www.vamworld.com/message/list/home
Hi Richie, Are you looking for a general reference book or a VAM specific reference book? or Both For general, Bower's Whitman book on Morgans. For VAMs, since the original Van Allen and Mallis book is rather expensive, a combination of Fey and Oxman's The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties: The VAM keys combined with the website above will do as well or better as it is more updated. Jim
Ideally, I would find a book that goes through each year and each mint and discusses things like luster, strike quality, and such. Basically key things to look for for each issue as well as major varieties. I have never really been interested in VAMs so much. So, I would like a book that starts with the 1878 (P) issue. Discusses quality of strike, and key characteristics of that issue. For this particular issue, the reverses would be key. What reverses are more rare (8TF, 7TF Rev of 1878, 7TH Rev of 1879) ect. Then, moves onto 1878-CC, and so forth. I don't even know if such a book exists. Like I said, individual minuscule die differences don't matter so much to me...but I want something that does through and analyzes the whole series. If such a book exists.
The Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of US Morgan amd Peace Dollars , by Van Allen & Morris . All you wanted and more . rzage
I think that the Bower's book, also by Van Allen of VAM fame, will do what you want. I also Like Wayne Miller's " An Analysis of Morgan and Peace Dollars" ( Ebay has 5 used for about $12 up". You might get the ISBN from Amazon on th Bower's book and ask at the univ. library if they can get a copy by inter-library loan before buying. Jim
........i have the comprehensive catalogue and encyclopedia of morgan and peace dollars and also a guide book of morgan silver dollars by q. david bowers, they are both very fine books.
I feel you can never have enough books! The CC&E is my primary book for VAM research before I go to VAMworld. Also for info on most aspects of dollars, except the cleaning part ( better mention the exception from now on.:thumb. But Richie seemed to want more a survey of Morgans from the "value/availability/general interest" angle, and I think the Bower's book would be my first choice. However, checking Amazon on CC&E, I see 2 used ones under $35, which is not the usual case. Jim
I agree the Bower book sounds like the one to buy first. I have it and my only complaint is that it doesn't really provide any great insights into collecting other than to repeat the advice to "buy the best coin you can afford." But it does cover every date and mint with pretty good detail.
That's the one I was recommended in the past and it was always very expensive. If there is one out there for $35...which I looked and can't find, please show me where because I do want to pick up a copy of it.
morgan................................. ............the only one i found was.......................500 bucks!! YIKES!! i'm glad i got one years ago!
I have this one, I think it's good book. http://www.amazon.com/Guide-Morgan-...=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1227904913&sr=8-9
Richie,......evidently this thread is well read. Both of those books are gone now! I thought about buying the autographed one myself as a spare , but didn't.... Jim
It's OK. I think I'll ask my parents for one for Christmas. I know where they can be purchased for $75...and that seems reasonable. I do appreciate the offer though.
Morgan book I've always liked the book "Morgan Dollars: An In-Depth Study" by Dean F. Howe. I'm surprised not to have seen it mentioned already.
.........i am going to find it and check it out!! as mentioned before, you can't have too many books on a subject that interests you. thanks for the mention.
