I have had this one for a number of years. It seems to me that grading standards have changed. What do you think NGC called this one.

63 back in the day, but probably a 65 now?

Agreed, either MS63 or 64, depending on the remaining luster.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I'm guessing you bought it as a 63.

    I'd call it a 64.

And I wouldn't be surprised at all to see it in a 65 slab.

Originally graded as a MS-64 but higher today. Looks like it's toning on the reverse around 5-6 o'clock.

    I think that's a flashier coin . . . 64 then and 65+ now.

It looks like that’s the copper coming through.

I see what looks like some surface marks by US and CA on the obv. I think it graded 63 then, 64 now? If I am not interpreting the photos correctly please let me know.

Is that obverse pitting at CA and UNI an artifact of die rust? Is this date known for that? Even if it is die rust and not PMD, I can the TPGs knocking down the market grade for this. I'm going to hazard MS-62.

    Here is the reveal.

This piece has very bright luster on both sides.

The photos are not the best, but here is a piece that was graded MS-65 that I sold to very well known dealer, who is an author and specialist in gold, in the early 2000s for 100% of the Grey Sheet price.

First you have to adjust to the fact that the coin is blown up to many times its size on your monitor. When you look at it in person, you won't see that stuff without a strong glass. Even then the coin has "blast luster" which leads some people, including the third party graders, to discount it.

Second, this is a 19th century coin. It was made with new dies which give it a lot of luster, but things were not perfect in the 19th century. That's why very few pieces ever get beyound the MS-66 grade.

If you expect 100% perfection, there are very few coins that you will ever buy, especially when you go back earlier than the modern era.

Wow on the coin. Amazing to see coins here I have never seen in my life in hand. Not to cheat I was around MS 63.
I thought it may be a little baggy for 64, but this is such a special series and low mintage, 64 seems to be the correct grade.

Baggy? It appears to have very clean surfaces. I guessed 63/64 too, but looking at the slab picture - which shows the luster better - I think it should have graded higher.

I'm going to go with 64 and was leaning towards maybe 65. Seems a bit self-congratulatory after the reveal, but that is where I was.
