I should have been more specific. I didn't consider all the Environmental Damaged coins in my comment. IMO, they don't count. Corrosion is corrosion and most can understand it.

From what I see, PGCS (especially) ignores most other types of damage on old coins. That's covered under crap I hear from PCGS dealers like: "The coin is 150 years old, you should expect some damage." Unfortunately, when a trusting collector tries to sell his 150-year-old coin to the same dealer, the large scratch on it is the first thing the dealer points out! :(

I feel the second-tier TPGS are usually stricter with regard to "problems" to the benefit of collectors and to the detriment of their reputations. Many dealers can't take the truth about their "gem."

    They most definitely do !

I strongly suspect the Damaged designation is because of the scratches on the bell.

    I call that damage.

I'm glad I'm late to this thread. I saw the nicks and scratches and would have gone MS62 but not details-damaged. I should start a thread called "How smart/foolish is wxcoin?" but won't because I can't handle the truth.

MS 61. Did not look at reveal, since post indicated reveal would be last evening and I received this CT this am (Sunday). I am ALWAYS late to the party... no exceptions.
There are enough dings, including one vertical across the reverse bands, which preclude both a higher grade and FB. It could even be less than mint state technically.
As for your intelligence, for this coin and in general, who am I to judge. It seems I do something stupid far too often.

On an UNC coin, I agree that I'd call that damage.

I'd be more forgiving on an AU coin, and probably let it pass.

And, I really do think that, based on the pictures in this thread, AU is probably the right grade for this coin.

Considering the following go through, the Franklin isn't as bad and isn't in as focal of an area.

The marks on the bell are nothing. The "damage" is the two gouges on the obverse at 7 oc.

I totally missed this one. I still stand by my 58* from when it was in NGC. I really like this coin at that grade and if PCGS was going to detail it I would have guessed AT but not damage.
