I am trying to complete my Kennedy halfs. I am finished the Unc coins, and now I am buying the proofs from a dealer on ebay. Today I got my first 7 coins from him all in these little clear round plastic capsles. I can't open them. I have tried sticking an axacto knife blade thru the slit. Can't even get it in to twist it..What is next?

    Perhaps they are in air-tites?

If so, they do pry apart. Not easy sometimes, but they do come apart. Try lightly squeezing the edges with some pliers to break a seal and then use your thumb tips to pull apart. If you look carefully, you will see small depressions where you can get leverage.

They may be in Kointains....a pain to remove.

Is it a substantial thick holder or an almost invisable holder........

Jack I thought of Kointains too , but they open fairly easily and an exacto knife though the wrong tool would slice right through them .
Are they hard plastic or does it give a little .

I think one is in Kointains. The other 3 are in airtites.

Kointains are flexible. With a little bending, you can get a fingernail underneath it enough to pry apart.

A razorblade twisted in the seam of an airtite usually does wonders.

It is a good thing OSHA is not allowed in peoples houses.

Arizona , I remember polishing Morgans with mercury in the late '50s or early 60s , looked nice and purty , except when I looked at them years later .

Ed - instead of a razor or an exacto try a sharp pocket knife on the Ait-Tites. Get under a good light first, get yourself some magnifying glasses. They sell 'em at the grocery stores for cheap. Then you'll be able to see seams, place the edge of th eknife right on it and apply gentle pressure. If you are on the seam it will open readily. Then just twist.

As for the Kointain - hate those things. Never could get them open. Finally had to use two needles to pry them apart. Again - use the glasses.

I had a gold bolivar in a kointain one time. Took me better than an hour to try to get it to open. Luck I had my benchmade poket knife. It was the only thing that would open it. Watch out on slip and it could leave a mark, on your hand.

Hi GDJMSP..I finally opened three with an axacto knife. Just pried it open enough to get my finger nail in them, and they opened. The other one, I threw it down on the kitchen floor, and it cracked just enough that I could pry it open..All the coins were perfect. But it's awful risky throwing them on the floor to open them. If they were expensive coins, I wouldn't have done it that way. Thanks

If they're airtites, keep in mind the joint is to one side, off center. Almost to the edge.
If you're trying to push the knife in dead center, you're pushing against solid plastic. I never have any problem popping open airtites with a pocket knife.
