Hello, My name is Christine and I am new here. I just found this forum. Looks like I am the only female paper money collector here? Let me briefly introduce myself. I became interested in paper money when one summer while we were in the U.S. visiting family in Michigan, a (distant) relative in Kentucky gave me some paper money as a child. Found a place not too far from where I live that sold paper money sometimes. Several years later my father lived in Australia for a few years (working for the Dutch government). I visited there several times and found a small place that dealt in paper money. I picked up quite a bit there. Subsequently life overtook my collection and it sat on a shelf for 16 years. The other day I ran into it again and my interest was revived. Back then I collected more or less everything. As a result I have a bit of everything. The most interesting notes in my collection I find to be a few MPC's I picked up somewhere. I have decided that I would like to focus on MPC's, Allied Military Currency and perhaps Japanese Invasion Money (found some of that in Australia, but I understand there are quite a few forgeries floating around? How can you tell?). Reason I chose these is mainly for historical interest. For the foreseeable future condition of notes I would buy is "nice to have" but not critical at this point. I plan to sort through my collection one of these days and figure out what I want to keep that isn't in the categories I mentioned, and which notes I would like to sell or trade. I am pretty sure that 99% is worth very little, and nothing is worth a great deal. Which leads me to my first question: Any suggestions one where to sell/trade notes, other than on eBay? And follow on: What is the best/safest way to ship notes? Regards, Christine
Welcome to the forum, Christine. You will help make our group more diverse. I am not a currency collector so I cannot answer your questions but we have several currency collectors here who will be able to help you.
I can answer the shipping question. I would put it in a rigid mylar sleeve, then sandwich it between two pieces of cardboard that are just big enough to fit in the envelope. Then in red, mark the envelope "Do Not Fold" on both sides. In the US, I ship it insured, but don't ever tell the clerk that there's money in there. If they ask, tell them it's an antique document. Technically they don't have a right to ask, but they also have a right to report anything they want as suspicious. Hope that at least answer one of your questions. As for where to trade, I couldn't tell you. Right now I don't particularly care for eBay. Everything that I've acquired in the last 10 years or so came straight from a bank pulled out of circulation. PS. Please stop dumping all your coins in the midwest. I've got enough coins from the Netherlands already. LOL
I ship the same way gatzdon does. One of the best paper money shows in the world is held in Valkenberg. You may want to join the International Bank Note Society to make contact with other collectors for trades or sales. There are over 2,000 members worldwide.
Hi Christine, welcome to the forum. You will find a lot of members here who share your interests in collecting. Enjoy your stay here as you share and learn. BILL
Welcome Christine This is the way all of the dealers ship to me and I have not had an issue yet. You will find a couple others here that are not men like Kdkenn that have started collecting notes. eBay is the biggest place to buy and sell notes - I am afraid I have not found many other places I like besides the connections I have made with friends and dealers. Good Luck and Best Regards ~ Darryl
Christine welcome to CoinTalk, you can also buy some lightweight rigid plastic board for shipping your notes, I like JIM notes as well LOL
Any suggestion on a good place to get those? Sorry about that LOL. And Dutch euros aren't even that interesting. Perhaps because I see so them all the time. There is usually a spike in "foreign" euros just after vacation periods. While having the same currency across much of europe does have its advantages, I would just as soon have stayed with the guilder. Regards, Christine
You could try a art supply shop that is were I get mine from, also on the Dutch euros I will be posting a very interesting one very shortly
U bent hier welkom:thumb: It is nice to have a collector from Netherlands here. I collect lots of paper money from around the world, and Netherlands is one of my favourite countries to collect from because the paper money is uniquely Dutch and cannot be compared to any other paper money from other countries. See my Dutch treats as well as others here: http://www.geocities.com/scottishmoney/banknotes/netherlands/netherlands.html
