I received my first ever Mint Quarter bag, Hawaii Denver Mint. Well, I am not impressed. First the quarters came in a poorly packaged state, allowing them to move and rattle around. So, I opened them and search them all. Approximately 95% of them had very bad bag marks, some even destroying some letters like the little i and the small o’s. Don’t think I will do that again. Do you all have the same experience with Mint bags? What would the grade be for mint quarters w/bag marks? Kona
What condition did you expect a bunch of quarters dumped together into a bag to be in? If I was looking for MS quarters I probably would buy them slabbed or at least take my chances with rolls.
My purpose of buying bags from the mint is to search for errors that;s the only way of getting some major error coins like broad strikes multiple triple struck coins etc i would not just get bags from the mint just to get uncircated coins. i was thinking of getting some bags to search for them myself even through you have to pay over the value and not much depending on the quantity I would say the major error dealers buy these bags, it makes you wonder how they get major erros in there inventory i have never come across real major erors in bank rolls that;s for sure. Here are some posiblities you can come across wit h mint sewn bags some do grt byuy
Kona, Mint bags are made by the mint for distribution to banks so they can distribute the coins so that they can be spent. They are not made with numismatic interests in mind whatsoever, these are coins designed for circulation only. As far as what grade, I have no idea, but I would imagine that modern issues would tend to be graded quite harshly. Bill
Bill, I think Kona actually meant something like this. Those are made specifically to sell to collectors.
thank you rld14 that explans it better than saying: And the question is: Why would you waste your money buying for the US Mint? kona
Yes, peter you are correct. Maybe Treashunt has a better way of finding error coin that he would like to enlighten us with. kona
Wai a minuet, I'm losing you. You linked to the mint showing a $25 bag of quarters selling for $32.95. Above post said like What do you expect the coins to look like after getting tossed around. I agree. Then, you say those are specifally to sell to collectors. What would a collector want with coins that are nicked, scratched, gouged, etc? Error coins? There's got to be a better way? Am I not following your train of thought and meaning? zg
The best (highest quality) coins rarely come from the mint bags. Look into mint sets if high grade coins are your goal. As others have said, mint bags are good for finding errors -- and making change -- not much else.
Peter, Gotcha. Still I suspect that these are normal circulation quarters thrown in $25 sacks with a pretty white tag sewn on and then sold at a $8 markup. Or am I being too cynical?
You are exactly correct. But you left one part out. They start out in bags that are so big that it takes a fork lift to move them. Then they are sent to distribution & packaging centers where the coins are counted and put in small bags to sell to collectors. Banks no longer get their coins in bags.
Yeah, there's a reason why MS69,70 coins go at premiums. Their conditions are under assault at the mint before they even go out! What gets through miraculously unscathed therefore goes for a premium. The proofs are handled with care, but that's about it to my knowledge.
Looks like I need to get down to Philly and do another tour of the mint, last time I was there was in, god, 1981 I think? I was 6 years old.
In September 07, I was in Philly for the weekend. I stood on the corner there about 100 ft from the building, on my way over to the Constituion center. Did not tour the mint. March 08, I get the coin bug and I'm back into collecting after a 14 year hiatus. Guess how I feel. :headbang: I don't know if I'll ever get back there.
I-80 East to 76 East (PA Turnpike) then Schuylkill Expressway to Philly I've driven to Chicago for the weekend before!
