Something about this cent just doesn't look quite right. The weak strike at the obverse top while the rest of the coin appears to be heavily struck. The large amount of wear on the hair and ribbon seems to be more than the overall wear on the rest of the coin. The point of the bust and the necklace seem "off." The shape of the last ribbon is wrong. A few bubbles between the headdress and LIBERTY.

The whole thing looks like a casting but it is being offered as genuine by a reputable dealer.

Besides everything else that looks wrong , the N of one on the reverse looks to strong to be legit . IMO

I would steer clear of that coin, especially if it is not slabbed.

Yeah - who is offering this coin for sale? The wear pattern looks like what you typically see, but the overall appearance just has something wrong with it.

You may want to rethink your opinion on that.

Okay - greatsouthercoin. That explains the pictures - never bought one of their coins just because of the pictures. It might be real, but something sure was done to the coin - tooling or something. I would not touch it at all.

I still don't see what you all must be seeing. This IHC does look funky but the pictures of the other coins in their store look to me like great coins. That's why I pulled this picture, it just didn't seem to be in the same league as the rest of their offerings. I haven't dealt with them so I don't know exactly what you get from them but based on the pictures I've seen I don't think I'd hesitate to deal with them.

What exactly do you mean when you say "...just because of the pictures?"

    Genuine?

IMO the photo has all the looks of a counterfeit coin.

    Guys,

Tell me that NONE of you even remotely think that this coin is real? This is about the only 1877 I found that is more obviously counterfeit... I edited it to be safe, but Team America - World Police fans ought to get it :)

The coin is questionable at best. Look at the legends for goodness sake.

Great Southern specializes in a certain kind of coin. The bay makes it highly profitable.

There are folks who troll shows just looking to buy these types of problems, crack and sell raw, overgraded dogs, cleaners, dippers, etc etc.

Ebay has buyers lined up 3 deep for that type of coin.

Without bashing them, I'd say proceed with caution.

Not only that, eBay pulled it, not the seller.

    Why do you say that?

    What's wrong with the pictures?

Without bashing them (?), why should I proceed with caution? Which ones were cleaned? Which ones are overgraded?

Perhaps one of you could be so kind as to point out what you are talking about. Here's GS's current sales - http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/greatsoutherncoin_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZ The coins I see, and the pictures, all look pretty nice to me.

Show me an example of what I should be looking at. If these are problem coins, what makes them that? And I don't mean the IHC I started this thread with - I know the problems with it, that's why I posted it.

I haven't bid on anything from this seller and have no immediate plans to do so. But when a question is asked, I feel an answer could be given that is informative.
