Anyone want to take a stab at this one. Hopefully my pics are good enough for you to see it. NGC graded just to be sure.
You have not been around here long enough. Believe me, were that a 61, I would not bother to post it.
I do not know what I am doing wrong with my pics then. Maybe they are just too big. With a looupe in hand ,there is a nick on the cheek (that does not show above) and one each on the E and N in "CENT". If you look closely, there is a tiny spot on his cheek. Oh, and all the luster needed for any grade.
How many times have I heard on here that you are to grade with the naked eye or a 5 X loupe at most. That pic you have there at least 20 X. Even my original pic is nearly 10 X on my computer. I am not going to tell you that you cannot find something there, but you have hunt to find it. In hand, that is one of the cleanest shoulder I have and that includes 60+ MS67's.
The fields on this coin are insane even with the monster magnification. Reducing the dimensions of the coin down to around 5X (Ctrl Scroll mouse button if you have it) and the defects fade out. I'd love to have this coin. My personal 34P was graded 65Red by PCGS before I pulled it from the slab. This coin looks better. My guess is MS66Red with a star.
rlm, I guess the next question would be! Are all of those scratches on the coin or on the holder? Frank
I not sure I can completely answer that question. The slab looks clean to me, but some of those "scratches" I really cannot find. (BTW, my monitor may be bad, but my eyes are still pretty good.) Looking at Doug's pic, the "Y" and line to its right are there. Just as a point of reference, the longest of them is about 1/32 of an inch long. The spec to the left of the bust is dust.
I have no idea if these will help or not, but here are some more pics with slightly different angle and lighting.
No further than Ms 62 that's what it looks like from the pics anyway. i think the obverse will take it down ,very weak strike jazzcoins Joe:whistle:
When they grade the coin they always go for the lower grade if the reverse is a higher grade then the obverese either way they alwats give it the lower grade So this coin will get the lower grade because of the obverse.which is about MS62 Jazzcoins joe:whistle:
I give. That coin was graded MS67 and I assure you that in hand it is not overgraded for any reason mentioned here. There is nothing about the coin to indicate that there are nicks all over it. I is a full clean red and a better than average strike. The only flaw I find notable is a spot on Lincoln's cheek that has not even been mentioned from the pics.
You are quite correct, grading is done with the naked eye for the most part. And yes, I have said it probably a thousand times. Even so, based on your pics I have no doubt that I would see those marks with the naked eye. And when I saw them I would then use a 5x glass and look closer. I blew the pic up for one reason, to point out the area of my concern and make it obvious. Those marks, coupled with the light scuffs in front of the face should limit that coin to grading 64. Since NGC chose to grade it 67 I can only say that they screwed up - big time. Were the coin mine I would send back for consideration under the grade guarantee. All I can do is tell you my honest opinion.
