i got some trade dollars to and looks like i may have a 1879cc. dont seem to know much about these coins. my guess is that it will grade xf to au.. can anyone tell me anything about this coin.
1879 is a Proof-only year for Trade Dollars. There were no Trade Dollars minted in Carson City that year. Sorry but your coin is a fake. Can you post pictures?
Join the club. I hope this does not sour you on coin collecting. I bought a Trade Dollar on eBay a few years ago. It looked a bit odd to me but I dismissed the thought that it could be counterfeit. But I kept looking at it and thinking it does not look right. Finally I took it to my local dealer who immediately told me it was a fake. I decided to educate myself on how to identify counterfeit coins and now I collect counterfeit coins.
Thank you.. i will always collect coins. i have been doing it for a lot of years. i have been collecting walkers for about 20years. and today i got into something i didnt know anything about.. 10 coins $475.00 gone.. i think i will stay with what i know about.. :goofer:
Remember, Trade Dollars are among the most counterfeited coins...I'd imagine there are more fakes out there than real one's. Be very careful when buying them, especially online. I would like to pick a couple up but I need to study up on the coin first so I can learn to spot a fake. I probably wouldn't buy one raw...but they counterfeit slabs now too, so learn to diagnose the coin and if something seems wrong...pass.
Ouch! $475 is a pretty big hit. Treat that lost money as a down payment on your numismatic education. Rather than "staying with what you know about" I recommend that you expand your numismatic knowledge by educating yourself in the area of counterfeit detection as well as other coin series that you may be interested in. Knowledge is power and the more you know about coins the better equipped you are when you go out and buy coins. I'm sure you learned a lesson with those 10 coins. If you are anything like me, the lessons you remember the best are the ones that cost you the most. Hang in there and keep on collectin'!
Can you go back to the seller and get refunded? Even assuming he sold it unawares, he still can not pass good title if it isn't as described. Meaning if he represented as genuine. I know in some cases that isn't going to help, but is it possible in your case?
I agree with Condor. If it isn't too late and you purchased it on eBay, file a complaint. If a local dealer, he must pass good title, and a fake can't be sold with good title.
You can file a complaint with Paypal, if you used them and are within their time frame. You also can use your credit card company if you paid that way. You may need something in writing from the dealer stating that the coin is a fake.Have you contacted the seller about a refund? My own impression is that about 50% of the common date raw Trade dollars on eBay are fakes, and about 95% of the raw CC mint Trades.
