Remember that drunk game you had with your friends? You know, the one where folks would rank each other's butt? No? Okay, maybe it was a weird drinking game I played with my friends then...Nevertheless! Museums around the world are currently participating in what's called the 'Best Museum Bum' battle. The objective? To determine which museum has the best butt in their collection. Due to the coronavirus and with museums temporarily closed, the Yorkshire Museum organized a Curator Battle series that features daily themes for museums, allowing them the opportunity to showcase the items in their collections on Twitter (#BestMuseumBum). And boy what a success it has been because other art museums have begun uploading images of their behinds. Here are some examples : Yorkshire Museum Ciurlionis Museum Musée Le Louvre Can we do the same game with coins ? Here's my favorite, the famous Venus "VENERI VICTR" reverse. Can you beat that? Looking forward to see your examples ; and if you never heard of me anymore, it's probably because the morality squad of CoinTalk decided that I broke the rules...
This is the coin that @Deacon Ray has a die match making us coin cuzins. I think it has one of her best portraits- that is why I really got it.
Mrs. FF and I have been looking at some of the entrants. The entry from the Walker Gallery is the winner in our household. She said that if she had a butt like that, she'd want it immortalized in marble too. I don't have any coins with good bums on them unfortunately. One of my "goal" coins is a Julia Domna with the Venus booty.
This is a picture I took of David's butt at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida. I have this in giant 20x30 frame on my wall.
The Aphrodite Kallipygos (Which means "Aphrodite with the beautiful buttocks") at the National Archaeological Museum, Naples wins, IMHO. Aphrodite herself is admiring the reflection of her booty in the pool of water in which the statue stood. And to keep it numismatic, I'll add a Venus Victrix NOT of Julia Domna:
Nice butts, but get a load of Mars' profile deriére on this antoninianus of Claudius Gothicus. Try and beat that!
I think this Domna Venus has beautiful curves. Weird feet but great butt . Julia Domna Augusta, CE 193-217 AR denarius, 17 x 19 mm, 2.72 gm Rome mint; struck under Septimius Severus, circa AD 193-196 Obv: IVLIA DOMNA AVG; draped bust right Rev: VENERI VICTR; Venus standing right, back facing, leaning upon column to left, holding palm frond and apple Ref: RIC IV 536 (Septimius Severus); RSC 194 Formerly slabbed; NGC net grade XF
Other than Venus, I think it's be hard to have a best butt contest with just Roman coins. Maybe there are more Greek examples? Looking at some of the Jupiter and Sol reverses, perhaps we should compare other anatomical attributes?
I'll start with a not quite human satyr from a 5th century BC stater of Thasos. The die was cut straight down in the rear region so a view from an angle is needed to get the effect. Unfortunately wear has merged the nymph into the satyr keeping this from being a good double. While I have several of the Domna coins, none of mine are a fine as TIF's. Rome drape over column left (common) drape under palm right (common) Drape on both sides is scarce on Rome mint denarii but usual on AV, AE and on Eastern mint coins. 'Emesa' ordinary reverse but IVLA obverse legend Among the rarest coins shown here is the spelled out VENEBI VICTBICI die. This obverse die also comes with a spelled out reverse that uses R in place of B. Later 'Emesa' changed to VICTOR Alexandria (Thanks, Sev!) Finally is the Septimius from Alexandria. I do not consider these to be errors and would appreciate images of any other coins of this type that anyone finds.
I posted this before, BUT, Umm... Baby Got Back RI AE As Trajan CE 98-117 26mm 11.0g Rome Laureate Draped - SENATVS POPVLVSQVE ROMANVS Victory R wreath palm S-C RIC 675 - Caesar: IACTA ALEA EST - Kong Fuzi 孔夫子: When strict with Oneself, One rarely fails...
Thanks, @Ocatarinetabellatchitchix and all of the folks who posted their coins. @Mike Margolis and I share a die match. I sent my coin to NGC for entombment last year and this is the first time that I’ve shown the results. As you can see by my face, I’m not too happy with the “brushed” rating.
My Alexandrian Domna of the type comes from different dies to those illustrated by Doug above Combining IVLA (sic) DOMNA AVG with VENERI VICTI (sic)
GREAT new Avatar, Deac! DUDE. You look like a VERY SERIOUS Ancients Collector, NOT to be contended with! Very cool! Great coin too.
and @TIF figured out the die match with her wizardry! I have kept my coin but still wish the envelope it arrived in did not have a Bulgarian return address although the seller is on VCoins- so who knows?
Thank you for tagging me, Mike! I haven’t been spending much time with my collection recently and your post rekindled my interest. It’s alway great to see the folks who inspired me when I started out @TIF , @dougsmit , @Alegandron ...and many others.
