There are no rules. Some go with the highest grade or even the lowest grade. Some go with the first date of issue for that coin type. Others want each coin to be about the same grade so they have a matching look. For years, I was trying to build one with each coin being a special variety for each type. It was slow going and costly. Had to give up on that one. I have a few thoughts about building type sets. Be picky with each coin. Take your time and stay away from problem coins if possible. Don't just grab the first coin you see to fill the hole.
Sounds good. I'm leaning toward the lowest price date for each type, and within that the highest grade I can afford. Just curious what an example or two would be of a "special variety" within a specific type? Like a double die for example?
I have put together a set of holed type coins. They are problem coins but I try get them in decent grades.
There are several editions and the latest editions are split in two volumes. I’d suggest to always buy the nicest coin one can afford for a type set. Damaged/cleaned or low grade coins won’t make me happy.
Due to age and health issues I decided to sell off my collection which I've almost done. But after seeing this thread I decided I'd like to try this. So given my situation I'm going to do this on a budget and not worry about getting a pristine coin. Now if I was in my 20's-40's I'd be buying these coins in the higher grades. I have a lot of the 20th century coins already that I hadn't sold. Probably the coin I'll pay the most for is a Trade Dollar. Otherwise I'll be okay with lower grades. Especially given the costs at today's prices. The album I bought on ebay and awaiting has a gold page. I actually have all of them but they are encapsulated graded that I won't break out. Otherwise I think this will be a fun and educational effort to keep me engaged over the next several months. Especially since I just completed a birthday type set collecting all the coins minted in the '52 years. The toughest coin to find and acquire was the 1852 Liberty Head $10 Gold Eagle. I finally found one in AU50 and it wasn't cheap. Again I should have started this years ago!!! Anyhow really appreciate Bradgator starting this thread and the fun I've had reading about his "journey" with this Type Set. Thanks so much for doing it!
Indian Head 1864 copper-nickel variety opinions welcome and appreciated. Two on ebay. Search for the ebay ID numbers: 324018731592: listed as choice gem bu for $275 353112828133: listed as AU for $188.99 Three questions: do you agree with the gradings? And is the BU one worth the extra money? And is the BU one possibly cleaned? It's so shiny! Thanks.
Just purchased my last one. A problem free 1860 O graded by Anacs. Should match the whole set nicely. Cant wait to get her in. Sellers pics:
I'm going to use your collection above as inspiration as I start my collection. I ordered the Intercept album today, including the extra Gold page. Just curious: which year of Sacagawea did you buy? I can't quite read the year.
The last page of the Intercept type coin album seems odd to me. Seems like just a very limited random handful of bicentennial and commemorative coins. What's the deal with that? I will probably remove it. And put the gold coin page, sold separately, in its place.
I agree Rick! I just got mine album today in the mail. Pretty stoked to start filling it in with what I have on hand and then acquiring the rest. Got a nice deal on the album on ebay as a slightly used one. But it looks like brand new!
