I did some prospecting on some half dollars today. Started at one bank with 5 rolls. Went through them and found nothing. Took them to another bank that has an automated coin counter, and a very fine looking teller, (I mean extra-fine), and sold them back. They didn't have any more halves. Went to a couple more banks only to be told they did not have any halves. So I went to the oldest bank in my small suburban town and bought 6 rolls. Went through them and found three 40% silver halves! Took then right back in that bank to their automated coin counter, and came out with 6 more rolls. Found nothing special. Took them back in again, and went to the automated coin counter again, but this time when I put my 120 halves in, as it was counting it past $60....all the way to $95! I did my best to remain cool, knowing the entire bank building is surveiled at all times. It also rejected a few coins as well, one of them being a 5 ruble coin like this one. http://www.cbr.ru/eng/bank-notes_coins/coins/?file=Coins_97/rub_5_97.htm Carried my ticket to the teller, not so fine this time, and got my $95 and left. Came out great today! 3-40% silver halves 1-Russian 5 ruble coin $35 more than I started with
Before anyone claims that you ripped off that poor teller: 1) the machine counts, not you; 2) the bags are sealed, and the teller simply arranges for shipment; 3) The rolls were probably overfilled; or 4) a bunch of coins had gotten stuck in the machine and were loosened up adding to the count. 5) Most likely, the only one who lost was the previous user of the machine, who will never know that the 'bank' ripped them off. 6) the end.
LOL! Thank you for clarifying. Besides that, it just seems like a lot of work to find a few 40%'ers. The banks, collectors, non-collectors and everyone else has had 44 years to sift through the change in this country. I know some people have luck but I don't think I would waste my time. Besides this, it all gets diluted with billions of fresh, new change each year that goes by. It's no coincidence that I get worn quarters from 1965, 1966, 1967 on a regular basis but never a 1964 or previous. The change supply has been so picked over that quickly glancing at the change I get back is the farthest extent to which I will take to sort through any circulating change.
I'm sure the person at the coin counter before me didn't realize there were still uncounted coins. I never felt like it was work, rather I enjoyed it. The rolls this bank has, and still has many more, were obviously old. I will be back for more prospecting at another time. I may bring my daughter in with me next time. The fact that I found 3 40% coins means they have not been picked over enough to remove all the silver. So I'll be happy to oblige.
When I read this i swore I'd just keep my mouth shut, but things like this P*** me off. Do you think that just because it was a machine, it was alright to take advantage of its malfunction? There have been instances of ATMs pumping out more money than was proper. People who accepted that excess money have been prosecuted, with good reason. The Money You Got Did Not Belong To You And You Should Have Returned It To Its Proper Owner - The Bank. I know from previous postings here that most will side with you and say "finders-keepers, losers-weepers" or some similar blather, but I think you Know that what you did was wrong, otherwise you would not have "... do your best to remain cool ...". If it was right, why didn't you share the joy of your good luck with the teller? She would have been so happy for you. Think what you want of me but I am disgusted with people who think it is perfectly okay to take advantage of others or others' property. Just remember there is karma; some day someone will take advantage of you. I hope you're man enough to just shrug it off. Let the brickbats fly.
Old man yells at cloud. :mouth: I actually argued with a woman at a gas station when she gave me too much money back. I explained it to her and she still gave me attitude.
lincoln wheat's that's im looking for I found a 1995 DDO MS-63 and 1972 DDO EF-40 week ago, and now it's time to find the 1922 plan
I disagree. Its not his responsibility to make sure the bank's machine works. And once the money was in his his possession it was completely his, legally. And show me proof that people have been arrested for malfunctioning ATMS. Those cheep bodega ATMS malfunction all the time and you can't get your money back. There is such a thing as being too honest. And there is no Mitzvah in it. Banks have saved billions of dollars replacing tellers with ATMS, and then have the gual to charge for their use. The can go the heck. they steal every chance they get. If their ATM or coin machine is broken, they have a responsibility to make sure it is accountable. BTW - this is not finders keepers. This is the bank can' t COUNT, and if its in my hands it is my money. Ruben
Pay attention to the last line. http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/07/28/generous.atm.ap/index.html?eref=rss_us Alot of people on other articles said the bank would just debit the difference. Look up ATM laws. I found something, now you look something up.
Sort of like the CEO's that run these companies, hmmmm but it's ok for them to rip off the share holders, thats what I think I read in your comment. I don't agree with stealing but do you think stores or banks return money to the rightful owner when the cash is over by 35.00 Dollars no. oh well!
davidh, also I guess if you bought a roll of pennies at the bank and found a 1909 S VDB MS65 that you would return it to the bank. If you didn't would that make you a thief also, sort of the same thing He was using a machine to count lose change and it paid out more than he put in, how many times do you think that thing has ripped people off.
Your example is probably intended to clear your own conscience because you know in your heart you would cheat the bank without hesitation. To the bank, face value is all that matters. Numismatic value is a shared belief among collectors, not bankers, so your example is irrelevant. We live in a society where honesty doesn't count for anything, people have no conscience, and all bad behavior is excused as someone elses fault. Expect to be cheated because this is acceptable now. Morality is a quaint custom from the unenlightened past. So when you are cheated, it's your fault for not detecting it. When someone steals your property, it's your fault for leaving it unguarded. When someone hits your car and speeds off, it's your fault for occupying the space they wanted to drive through. That's the way it is now.
