Charles I halfcrown (Hawkins type 5) with initial mark sun. This mark was used on Tower mint coinage struck between 10th Nov 1645 and the pyx trial of 15th Feb. 1647. It was also used for coins of the Commonwealth from 1649 to 1657.

Sunfaces it is, then. Here's another recent purchase.

I thought it was quite cheap for an 1879 coin in MS66 grade. It cost me about what the grading fees would have been, had I submitted such a coin myself.

Another Charles I halfcrown struck at the Tower mint with mintmark sun. The obverse die in this case is sun over (R) which means it was originally used during the period 15th July 1644 to 12th May 1645 before sitting on the shelf for at least 6 months until sometime after 10th Nov. 1645 when mm. sun became operative. Not particularly attractive, but typical for this poorly struck issue. Ex Middleham Hoard, Shuttlewood and Adams collections.
