Hello everyone! A friend of mine came across this auction, and noticed that there looks to be a mint mark here that has either been removed, or damaged in the process of removing it. I myself see an S and O mintmark shifted to the left and right where the mint mark "should" be, and where it "should" be, I see a faded O. Please look at his pictures and let me know what you think! Thanks! http://cgi.ebay.com/1894-P-Morgan-Dollar-Silver-Coin-KEY-DATE-1894-P-RARE_W0QQitemZ260318818412QQihZ016QQcategoryZ139812QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (I have also attached a picture for those of you who don't know what in the world I'm talking about )
Candidly, I think that those photos are so crappy and oversharpened that your friend is seeing something that's not really there. Respectfully and honestly submitted...Mike
I think it's like The Face On Mars. If you look at a pattern of random markings, your mind tends to fill in something familiar. I don't see what you are seeing.
Unfortunately, the key die mark diagnostics on the reverse can't be seen without sharper, larger photos. Anyone who buys one of these uncertified, or without close examination first, is setting themselves up for a big hassle if it isn't real, imo.
something just dont look right about that coin alot of little bubbles around and under one dollar maybe casting marks
On the photo, portions of the coin's reverse have a strange bubbly "showflake" effect... above the arrows, 'twixt the wing and wreath along the bottom around the words ONE DOLLAR Is that an artifact of "oversharpening" a digital image (Photoshop or whatever) ? If that's on the actual coin, I would suspect a counterfeit.
I would stay far away from that coin. Like as already been said, it's a key coin without clear photos. That in itself is a big "no no" for me. I won't buy a common coin with bad photos...so you can imagine what I think about keys. With coins like this, I typically won't even look at them on eBay unless they are slabbed by a TPG. I know people say don't buy the slab (I say that too), but there are too many counterfeits on eBay to take a chance. Then, there is something omonious about the reverse of that coin. Too many marks where the mint mark shouldn't be. Finally, this is a variable coin. The fact the nobody bid on it means that we aren't the only people who see something wrong...therefore, we aren't imagining it.
