This is my first post. I have to say I learned a lot from reading other posts and haven’t had to ask a question yet because they have been answered in other posts. Thank you all who share your knowledge with those of us who are not as experienced. I’m posting pictures of what is perhaps an error? If so was it struck in grease? Also are the columns in the Memorial doubled or do they all look like that to one degree or another? I looked at some random reverses and see perhaps a ghostly image in some but in this coin it seems very pronounced.Thank you for your time!
It appears to have plating problems. Blisters and bubbles were very common (although the planchet supplier is much better now). If the zinc blank isn't cleaned properly, the dirt/oil/contamination keep the plating from adhering and it forms blisters and bubbles. They can be interesting, but are not considered errors. They reverse may be struck through grease, but it's not unusual to find coins that are weak in that area. If you look on the obverse, the area opposite STATES oF is Lincoln's shoulder. It takes a lot of metal movement to fill that part of the die, so the top of the reverse sometimes suffers from lack of metal flow Finally, the reverse columns are normal Welcome to coin talk. Read the threads and pay attention to the links to error reference sites. Learning the minting process is probably the single most important thing you can do if you're interested in errors. Best of luck
Oldhoopster : thank you for the reply! I have read some and that saved me from asking about a few DD that were MD. I’m trying to limit questions to ones that, because of lack of experience or not finding the answer from reading, that I’m unsure of. I do know about blisters, and while not a mint error, I do think they are neat. Thank you too for looking at the columns too! I just couldn’t tell if it was normal or not. I really appreciate you taking time to look and answer! This site is really great!
I like the sense of humor I have seen so far. I have thick skin, and I’m sure I’ll ask a stupid question and get some fun poked at me but I’ll live.
