Right there in the title of the "article". And this will be an anti-counterfeiting protect just until the counterfeiter get a hold of a real one and copies the underprint design. UV ink isn't hard to get and they will just start printing the desing on their fake labels. Here we go again. Give us more money and we will give you, oh well, nothing. If for some reason you want to open it what happens does it disappear, explode, or send you a message saying oop's you lose have to buy another one. If somebody steals it it turns purple wow what a great old idea. In my opinion PCGS is saying their sealed slab is not enough people... Ooh I know, it has a tracking device that tells you "We are sorry but your prize coin has been removed from the slab and we can no longer track it call the CIA for further assistance. My opinion only.
While I applaud (golf clap) PCGS for this baby-step in addressing their counterfeit slab issue, it really isn't anything they really should be proud of. As @Conder101 pointed out, it'll take 5 minutes for the counterfeiters to copy this. Heck, they'll probably use it to convince the unsuspecting that it's genuine. Not to mention it isn't protecting the average collector, as it's only available through authorized dealers. So now you would have to submit at a dealer's retail submission price, and pay even more for the added protection that doesn't protect anyone but the guy your wife sells it to when you're 6 feet under. JUST GIVE US PHOTOS OF EVERY SLABBED COIN, PCGS!!! Cheaper and (IMO) more effective.
It's extra security and it's newer so the older slabs don't have this feature. Are you a dealer? Did you read the link that @paddyman98 provided? If not, please do so to understand this.
Yes, I read it last night . How is this supposed to help the average collector to avoid counterfeit PCGS slabs? Are we to expect every seller to take images of their wares with a UV light? Should I start carrying a UV light with me shows? My feeling is that while this is a step in the right direction, I don't see it actually helping to prevent/minimize counterfeit PCGS slabs in the long run (as Condor101 pointed out). I'm not a dealer, so unless I want to pay another 3rd party to submit for me, this isn't even available to me. How many thousands of coins does PCGS grade from private individuals annually that won't have this feature? How does that protect us from the advanced and continually advancing skill counterfeiters have in reproducing slabs? Let's say the counterfeiters can't replicate the UV ink. Oh no! Whatever will they do?!?! They'll just keep doing what they've been doing; making fakes of coins that weren't submitted by authorized dealers, and selling them to unsuspecting/uneducated buyers because there's no way to very what coin should be in a PCGS holder, unless the submitter spent more $$$ for the Tru-View or Secure Shield. Now maybe I'm way off base, so how do you see this as beneficial to the average collector?
I have a small portable black light that goes with me when I go antiquing, to rock gem fossil and mineral shows and coin shows. They pick the details the eye can't. Glue, chips, cracks, dents, etc. it's a valuable thing to have.
