Punchouts

budgood posted " the coolest punchouts " in an earlier thread. Can anyone tell me how they are made? The carved coins I have an idea how they are produced. The punchouts, well, are they worked from the reverse by hand or machine?

They are simply one of the coolest coin related things I have ever seen. That 3D face is so cool I just have to know. How about availibility and price?

feeBay showed me nothing using altered, modified, machined or reworked search terms in Coins & Currency. Google is next.

I'm reminded of beachside vendor in Aruba. He had Walkers, Mercs and Morgans that had been cut out and mounted for jewelery. I commented to my wife that the coins had no numismatic value and were nice enough as collectibles but not to a coin collecter. The vendor got pretty hot and insisted otherwise. He lost a sale as the bride was pretty interested.

 

Hello, I'll post a pic of the reverse on Monday .It is worked from the back . The term I believe is Repousse. You should be able to find out a bit more before I post the coin again by doing a google search. This piece is only the second I have seen in about 4 years.

H. Toad pointed one out to me a few weeks ago that was on eBay & repunched with an elk comming out of the coin.

Here are a couple of pics of the back. If you notice there is a spot where an additional support was used. I am assuming that is was put in that spot to back up the additional pressure needed to properly incuse the "Liberty" in the head band.
The loop for the old pin is still on the back but the solder holding the pin has broken. I do still have the pin though-

 

Thanks Bud. How the coins were worked to produce those results was killing me with curiosity. Seeing the reverse gives an indication of what was required. Used as pins also? Interesting, thanks again.

Here is another slightly different punchout that I came across- Nowhere near the depth or desing quality but still pretty cool.

They show up on Ebay from time to time. Only worth a few dollars each.
The dollar one was much more and purchased from a forum member on a different site. Fun to collect. Some are quite old but there are folks still making these today.

LD - I love that 1924 Peace Dollar! I checked ebay and found one with JFK on french coin or token, but I like the lady Liberties much better.
