Saw the collection today (friend's mom's inherited collection), and here's the report! These are the coins that I thought were the best of the bunch and the ones I would consider buying. If you want (and it would be mucho appreciated!), comment which you would buy and for how much! Morgans: 1878 w/ 7 feathers, Reverse of 1878 type 1880 S- some toning 1883 CC-really attractive toning, probably G-F grade 1884 O- some toning 1890 - really attractive toning 1903 O Peace: 1921 - XF-AU? I'd probably pick up all the mercurys and any of the teen LWCs if they're in F or better and reasonably priced.
Rather than cherry picking, you might consider offering a price for the entire collection. If that's not an option, consider purchasing every coin in one or two series. Down the road, you want your friend's mom to relate to HER friend's about the nice young man, yada ,yada yada. Any coins of a series you choose not to keep are then your responsibility to sell. Not knowing the dynamics of the situation this is merely a thought to consider. I've witnessed cherry picking lead to bad feelings among non collectors.
Morgans and large cent and some of the mercs. No ideas on price. Lincolns look 4 1931-s, 26-s (check the shoulder n strong strike), 24-d. Get the gold at 10 - 15% under spot. Then PM me.
You should probably go for the whole works instead of picking one at a time and leaving her to work at selling the rest. Without the Lincolns, there is around $2800 in value there for the coins you listed. I'd have to know the "couple of years" Lincolns that are missing to determine the remaining set's value. If she does have the early (teens) S-mints, the 14-D, the 24-D and the 31-S then you could add at least another $500. Go through them all, determine approximate Red Book and make an initial offer for the bunch at 50% RB.
lol, I just bought a Whitman merc folder in hope that this would be possible!! And a lincoln holder...depends on how much she wants to sell it all for. I would buy the entire collection, but once we get in the $K range I'm kind of out of luck...college students only have so much liberty, you know?? TheNoost, I'll see what I can do with that gold piece, thanks for the advice on the others. DavidH, my Red Book's in the mail, just bought it, so I'll be able to check that out in a few days!
