As bad as eBay is at detecting/deleting fakes (which is REALLY bad), Amazon has even fewer resources to detect them.
imo that should but up to the buyer. Initially there is nothing the platform can do. It is up to you to know. And I understand in most cases that is not possible, but I mean in this one it is literally all caps
If I'm gonna dish out that much money for a "Cupronickel Silver Color" "RESTRIKE", it better well be an 1893-S!!!
Here's the Amazon link... https://www.amazon.com/Antique-Unit...+silver+dollar+restrike&qid=1594844394&sr=8-2 Sure, the description says "RESTRIKE", but it doesn't say that...or "COPY" on the coin itself. The fact that it's non-magnetic and the correct size and weight leads me to believe this slug is illegal for sale.
It's being sold by a souvenir company and it's advertised as a restrike. The ad also says copronickel which isn't silver. As for the price, I think it's in line with what it is. I also think a lot of people will get suckered into buying it and it's basically worthless and always will be. I see nothing misleading in the ad itself.
I was going to say the same thing. Email Amazon the 1978 Hobby Protection Act makes this a blatantly illegal item to be sold in the US.
Except we have a Federal Law making any object like this illegal. If we do not try to enforce it, do you think anyone else in the world will? I do not CARE about this ad. The truth is, this item will be bought, and people will inherit it and try to sell it. When told its a fake, they will hate all coin collectors and accuse all of us of being crooks. However, if the word COPY is stamped in it, there is a chance they will not hate us, and accept grandpa bought a copy and not a real coin.
At least Amazon allows comments/questions to appear. I see a number of reviews/comments stating the item is a fake. When I purchase anything on Amazon, I first review all of the comments/questions/reviews. Most times than not, I can get information which helps me determine if I'm still interested in the item or not. I think ebay stopped allowing comments/questions to appear on auctions years ago.
What gets me is that even though the Hobby Protection Act says it's illegal to sell here, it's not illegal to buy from Alibaba or Tencent. Kind of like here in Mass. It's illegal to use a radar detector here but you can still buy one in Mass. Make it illegal to buy this garbage from China.
Depends on where the seller is located. If they are in China it is perfectly legal for them to sell it It IS illegal. It is legal for the sellers (if they are in China) to sell them, but it is still illegal for the buyer here to import them into the country. So the seller isn't breaking any laws, the buyer is.
Yes, they might of tried to legally cover themselves but word silver is right next to copronickel. That could trick at least 50% of the targeted people.
Would make no difference. You can't police what other countries are selling and customs have about a million things that is far more important for them to be searching for than a cheap replica coin
