"Colorized coins" = "jumping the shark." I've been a collector for a long time, and I'm looking to older and older series now, as the new "products" are totally meh.

What don't you understand? If I want a coin that was made for circulation why can't I find one in circulation or why isn't it included it the mint set?

"Then figure that many of them are marketed so that only a big dealer can get them."

What exactly is marketed so only big dealers can get them besides bullion? That's what I have been responding back against.

As to why you can't find a low mintage circulation coin, ask yourself why you can't get the winning lotto numbers as well. There's billions of coins out there and for people to complain they can't find something with a mintage of 2 mil or less type thing that's being completely unrealistic and not understanding moderns. They can all be found if people want to pay for them from people that were lucky enough, but there is no right for every coin minted to come to people at face value

I've never bought a colorized coin from a private Mint so why would I buy one from the US Mint? I wouldn't.

So, you are saying that if I look long enough I can find a 2020 S mint quarter in circulation? I understand all that other stuff you are saying. But, if I want an S mint circulation grade quarter I have to pay a premium. Or, I can buy 40 of them for $19 +. Let's say $20 per roll times 5 quarters a year. $100 dollars to get 5 quarters and then have 195 to unload. That is not the US Mint looking after collectors. That is greed and taking advantage of people who can't otherwise participate.

Wow, didn't see the colorized announcement. Make me sad. Next we will be seeing banjo shaped coins, etc. I would love something like Austria does with making niobium different colors by different processes, but not painted coins. The US mint was one of the few left with too much class for this I thought.

Possibly if you are lucky enough. Again there is no right to get everything from the mint for face value.

The S mint are hardly that interesting in my opinion and as said above there is no right for them to just pump out worthless items over and over at face value for people. There are plenty of items that have essentially no premium they do every year for those that want them. A ton of people get extremely bored by those over and over and over and over again like they did for several years.

Again though I have to ask what are the numismatic products that only big dealers can get I had initially responded to

Anyone that can afford to buy 40 quarters when they only need one and has an outlet to get rid of the 39 other is a big dealer when compared to us mine run collectors.

The U.S. Mint has absolutely no imagination. Both coins to be colorized should have been enhanced (clad half) and reverse proof (silver dollar). Then they would have been truly special. Instead, the coloring is just like any other add-on to a regular minted coin. DISAPPOINTING! But dealers will make money by slabbing them and selling for ridiculous prices.

    Gag...

The reason for the confusion is because the mint chooses to make a colorized version. The law sets a mintage limit of 750,000 half dollars. How they are split up between the various product codes is up to the mint.

They could have said 50,000 colorized and 700,000 regular, but that (might) limit their option. This way they don't have to make a decision until they see how sales play out.

I would hardly call the $20 entry fee for the quarter roll to be a qualifier for being a big dealer and actually would say that more than 99% of collectors have the ability to acquire such a product if they wanted too. Everyone has an outlet to get rid of the rest anyways, just spend them or eBay or take them to a show and get like a dollar each or sell them here. That hardly makes someone a big dealer.

I'm not so sure such a lazy job on the dollar will be popular at all. The half will likely be popular, but it is a high mintage. Unless they grade poorly I expect the premiums to be relatively modest for these

The 'kicker' to most of the new junk that the mint puts out will hardly ever increase in value. Learned the hard way years ago.

Thank you! So this does indeed limit the clad colorized to 75K?

Only because the mint announced that limit.

I doubt they've already minted all 750,000 coins. One of their cost containment strategies in previous years has been to mint in economic quantities as needed.

so there's nothing to stop them from saying "Well we minted another 100,000 half dollar coins and we sent 25,000 off to be colorized because it was so successful last time".
