1947 Mexico 5 pesos

 

Here be dragons too.

A Henry VII angel with mm. Anchor. The obverse die in particular provides a wonderful demonstration of what a rusted die looks like. The coin is interesting in that the spear end is an intermediate state between the cross-pommee head seen on the early coins and the crosslet head of the later ones. This has a bit sticking out of the pommee balls, so is neither one nor the other. Struck on a slightly small flan.

Another angel, this time from the reign of Charles I (1625-49) with a hole pierced for suspension and use as a touch-piece at the touching ceremony. Mintmark bell, the reverse over portcullis over harp. Charles I angels are rare, with only £12500 of gold used during the entire reign, i.e. 25000 angels were struck. The low mintages involved meant that the dies frequently carried over to the next mark, and sometimes a third, fourth or even a fifth mark in one case.
