grade thoughts on this one. Has edge toning but still lots of luster. Was hard for me to capture this in the pictures
Chin hit is on the holder

That toning appears to be in a terminal stage and detracts from the appeal of the coin. ~ Chris

I actually like the toning so I guess it depends on who is looking haha. added some better pics below.

I vote MS-65. If you don't want it send it to me. :hilarious:

I believe this coin has experienced true hell on Earth. I think it has been cleaned and then retoned in an album. The hairlines all over the fields on both sides are dead giveaways. RIP this coin :(

    Hmm....Well I'm not convinced it's uncirculated, or even a 58.
    Guess I'll say AU55.
I would be happy if my 1884S was this nice!

What is it exactly, you want help on (grade wise)? Is the grade hidden from you? I’m not precisely sure what you want us to say?

If it is an uncirculated coin, it is a major conditional rarity. Given the ugly surfaces, I am going to say AU 55, even though it is a good strike. I can’t see a TPG making that a 5 figure coin.

I am surprised alot of people think its ugly. I think it is quite nice looking in the hand. It is not MS though

Can I change my vote to VF-35? :singing::):):):) I was so far off, I think I should move in the opposite direction.

Oh ok. It looks AUish to me. Strike looks fairly decent though. I have a nice 55, and I’m good with it. Even though, I think it’s a 58? But this date (currently) isn’t much of a priority for me.

    55. 58s need to look pretty much like no-question MS coins for this date.

55, but don't like the looks either.

This is what a nice looking 1884s looks like. Notice the low grade MS status. This is a Great Collections coin, not mine. One can see how conservatively that date is graded. Any other Morgan in that condition would have been a 63 or 64.

Yes that one looks nice to and is way out of my league. I have a lot of other years that look like that as well and it is also nice in my opinion to have various other looking toned coins as well .

PCGS puts the 1884s at $22,500 for MS 62. In Mid grade AU, it is a $500 coin. So, MS specimens get the “treatment” at TPGs. I guarantee that multiple graders look at a probable MS, and have to agree on it, before certifying one as MS. When I had my full Morgan set, I had a nice AU 58. This is one of the most significant conditional rarities in the hobby.

Regarding toned coins, as you might know, I was a major enthusiast of toned Morgans. I sold over 200 of them, and kept a few. There is attractive toning, and unattractive toning. The OP coin I would deem as unattractive, as it is terminal looking.
