Recent Auction Wins from Dix Noonan Webb - Barber Seated IHC

Have had my eye on a few lots that finally went to auction at DNW this morning. I was hoping to get a fair price on these US coins given the primarily European market at DNW. I think I did pretty well. I’d love folks thoughts. Can’t wait to get the Barber quarters in hand to see what they really look like.

Nice! I bid on one lot, but didn't come close to getting it. I knew it was a long-shot.

 

Yeah, I got trounced on several other lots. The estimates were waaaay off on the conder token lots.

 

I’m interested to see if the 1862 IHC is rim damaged or if that is a CUD between 11:00 and 12:00 on the obverse. Also interested to see how many in the group are MS. Looks like lots of AU sliders in the lot.

 

Looks like a rim cud on the 1862 cent. You did really well on that lot if I add up AU prices on eBay. Pity you couldn't get it for their high estimate.

 

DNW seems to use a flat scanner technique to image lots like this so it’ll be interesting to see them all in three dimensions.

I was in that auction too, and bid on the IHCs. Only thing I 'won' was a James II gunmoney and I think I paid way too much for it. Maybe whisky and coin auctions don't mix well?

 

Well I’m glad you didn’t have so much whiskey that you outbid me on the IHCs. Those and the barber quarters were my main targets so I was very happy to come away with them. I had hops of landing that 1866 dime (8000 mintage!!!) but it got up there very quickly.
The small lot of dimes I took home were really just a bonus since I had already won one auction and would be paying shipping.

@coin_nut are there other international Auction houses that you use. I really like DNW but they hold auctions so infrequently.

 

DNW really does get top dollar. I like Katz in Prague, CZ. I still use ebay, although I get more disenchanted with them all the time. I tried one other, think it was numisbids, very disappointing. Got ripped off and had no recourse. I think there is a way to buy and sell here on CT, I should look into that more. I do have a lot of extras to get rid of.

 

I envy you great lot I know you must be very happy so I will just add be safe!

 

The coins arrived this afternoon from DNW and I am quite pleased with them in hand. I took better images and will post below.
First, the dimes:

 

Next, the quarters. My favorite is the 1894-S because of the fiery toning. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more attractive reverse.

 

And finally, the Indian Head Cents ... and friends. I think the 1888 is my favorite because of the purple toning. That was a surprise. The well struck 1862 is a beauty as well. Now I just need to decide what to keep and what to sell to finance this little extravagance. I also might send some for grading...who knows. Enjoy!

 

Great haul of lovely coins! No matter how much they cost, you did well to acquire them. I have one coin coming from probably that same auction, and hopefully I will remember to post it on this thread.

 

Very nice! I guess I would prioritize them by how much I'd want to keep them and then sell the low priority ones until the keepers are cheap or free.

 

That’s been my approach for the last several years. It is a nice way to keep the collection small and relatively affordable. Right now, the fiery 1894-s half dollar is definitely going to hang around for a while. Probably the better of the two 1863 IHCs And the 1890 dime too. The rest will likely be flipped. I’m into the entire lot for just over $1000 once auction, shipping and exchange fees are accounted for. I think there is plenty of room to make ends meet.
