A few weeks ago I commented in a thread about the opportunity the 2005 Jefferson-Bison nickels presented. Buy a roll of nickels, and send them to friends and relatives as an incredibly cheap day-brightener with the added benefit that you’re planting seeds for new collectors. Well, one of my seeds took root: my stepson told me that the two nickels I sent him (packaged in Air-Tites) piqued his interest enough that he is going to start collecting coins now ! Guess he figures that with the 2005-D and 2005-P nickels plus the 2004 Silver Eagle I sent last year that he’s half-way there ! I’m going to give his newfound interest a boost by sending him my 2004 Red Book (I knew I was keeping that for something) and my Coin Collecting for Dummies. And, I’ll go to a local dealer and get him an early 70s proof set (you can get those for about $6.00; unbelievable). He lives in Denver. Maybe I can get my pocket change quarter collection up to date on the state quarters: I have everything except the D mint coin on six quarters. He could be a handy resource for Denver minted coins.

A denver collecting relative is very useful man, he probably will get UNC like theres no tomorrow, and he could go to the mint too
I have done the same thing I was able to get a few rolls at face from a local bank and I have been giving them out as gifts, tips and just because. I even gave one to the front desk worker at the Holiday Inn who host's a monthly coin show as a gift from the coin collectors there. She was shocked that some one would just walk up and give her a coin, Maby I will be standing next to her at the show some day??
I heard from my Dad today. He said he took to work one of the 2005 Bison nickels I sent him and quite a few people were interested in it. I think next time I send him coins (when the Ocean In View nickels come out) I'll send him an extra couple dozen to pass out at work. For only a dollar or two (plus postage) this seems like an amazingly cheap way to evangelize the coin collecting gospel. Or, for another insipid metaphor, "Johnny Nickelseed".
Remember the movie about Passing it Forward? Well, each and every one of us is obligated, whether we like it or not, to pass it on to at least one individual. As for me, well, I have already lost count as I find great pleasure in introducing folks to coins and their value!
I really like the new Bison nickels, to me, its the nicest modern design we have.. Hopefully the mint gets inspired to create more great designs... A very neat way to encourage a new collector...Your stepson is our future!
I had a couple rolls of 2005 Bison Nickels that I got from the bank. What I did on Easter was put the Nickels in holders and put them inside prize eggs for our Easter Egg hunt.
3 rolls I got from the bank, one went to my father other 2 went into circulation. Got a funny reaction from my dad. He wanted to know why they didn't show the entire head of the indian!!! I guess he just figured an indian went with a buffalo.
