I had to sit out of this thread the first time around as I don't post coins before I have them physically in-hand. But, I've finally added a new comet denarius, the third one I've owned. It's still not perfect - they rarely are - but between the portrait and better-than-normal centering, I'm happy with it and didn't want to be without the type for too long:
It is a beautiful and really perfect coin. great toning to boot. However he probably means it is "missing" the very top of the comet's tail. that is all I see he may be speaking of?
Yes, and part of the D in DIVVS. Many designs didn't take into account the tendency for slightly imperfect centering and inconsistent strikes: the Augustus comet denarii are definitely one of these types. I would love to find an example with a broad flan and whitespace around all letters but this has been challenging.
