Hey all just a question. Can a 1996 D dime rust? I have one that looks like heck. I will scan it later tonight, thank you for your answers and thoughts. Sherri
I suppose it could, if it contained iron. I would think, though, that with the Mint's quality-control procedures, by 1996 they should have had planchet quality pretty well set. More likely alternatives are that it came into contact with ferrous material after minting and then rusted, it's not really rust, or it is struck on funky metal. Would like to see pics for a better chance at a correct explanation.
rust Good point, jetshack. I assumed that the word "rust" was used in the layman's terms; that is, that it was iron oxide. You're right, though -- any toning is oxidation. Perhaps the OP will respond with a more thorough description, or pictures.
