Do you guys think this set will be available right away from the mint or is it likely that we'll have to wait until the end of the year? What do you guys think they'll price a 4 penny proof set at?
Without the cent, wouldn't it be hard to make case purchases. I know that people say they could just round prices up to $0.05 and that would work some places. But, what about all the states with sales tax...wouldn't that create a problem since that tax always creates an odd amount of change? There are a few states without sales tax (like Oregon) and it would work in them for sure...but what about the rest of them?
Anything to get rid of the thing would be good... I'm move the currently to the Rubel if it would put the cent out of its misery. Ruben
you include sales tax in the price, and then round up (if 7 or more) or down (if 6). for example: what was once 2.39 with 8% sales tax becomes 2.58, which is then rounded up to $2.60 Granted, if in 1 year I buy 500 products, each at 2 cents more, that's 10$ more a year. But don't most people throw their cents (if they pay with cash) into a jar anyway?
If they were to put out a set like this, wouldn't it be mass produced? If it wasn't, all the people paying outrageous money for keys now, would pay outrageous amounts for a low mintage proof set as well.
I used to hate Pennies a lot ;-) and throw them on the ground, but guess what?!?, I found that they make wallets with a little change purse built in and now I am that guy taking forever making the exact change all around town Mwahaha. But on the serious side I believe that it is actually saving me much more than Ten Bucks a year as per I end up carrying much less change around and on some higher level I believe it makes me more consciences of the exact amount that I have and am spending ;-) Also, NO store would round down, it's common business practice already that anything that cost you a fraction of a cent is already being rounded up on you (except for your boss who rounds down those fractions of a cent, once again earning more money off you). For all those whom are still not satisfied with the penny, join the 21st century and get a debit/credit card and let your bank count the change lol. Sincerely, Donny
The Subway Token Clerks here used to get lose pennies from customers when the fare went up as a form of protest. That was the last useful use of the Lincoln cent that I could think of.... Ruben
In theory you could simply do what is done in countries where such rounding is common: You round the cash total, period. Prices of single items are not affected, payments with cards are not affected. Including the sales tax in the displayed prices would certainly be a good idea but is not even necessary for that. But as for the 2009 Lincoln pennies: I hope that they will be available in sets "ahead of time", like the state quarters. Christian
The mint has already stated that the uncirculated and proof sets will be available earlier next year due to the downsizing of the mint's product line. The new pennies will be in these sets.
