Does this dime look cleaned? It looks to me like a nice BU piece except for the dirt in some of the crevases. However, for that dirt to have accumulated it seems that it would have to have been circulated. I don't see any signs of wear due to circulation except possibly the few nicks on the rim and hits on the portrait and reverse field.
I'm no expert, but it looks to be unc. to me. Lots of luster and absent of any whiz marks. Nice looking Barber.
I don't see any hairlines that would indicate the coin has been cleaned harshly. The luster looks good as well so I don't think it has been dipped either. So, my non-expert opinion would say this is not a cleaned coin...but again, I'm not an expert.
I'd say it's a high Au-58 slider , probably been in someones pocket to get all the small scratches and dinks , also would account for the dirt . Still a well struck beautiful coin . JMO rzage
I think what you are calling dirt is actually the remnants of very dark, black toning. It's been dipped, definitely. The coin has its share of hits and dings but I can see no signs of wear.
Remember this is a dime, tiny little coin in a bag of other timy little coins. Tiny little coins make tiny little marks - lots of 'em.
i have to agree with Gd that coin is without a doubt dipped look at the unusual luster . I have a walking liberty that is dipped you just could tell by the luster it's a dead give away. Jazzcoins Joe
How so? It doesn't look cleaned to me. It looks like it may have been given an acetone dip to remove toning...but as far as I can tell in the pics the luster has shown no negative effects. I don't see any hairlines as evidence of scrubbing the surface with anything.
dipped? yes. cleaned- I doubt it, but you can't be sure unless you look at it with a point source light. I see a couple of slide marks on the cheek, but that's all. Nice looking coin.
I'm no expert and most of what I know about coins has come from listening to more experienced collectors like GD. I don't think the coin has been dipped and when I say dipped I mean in thiourea. I think if it was dipped the dark toning in the tight areas would've taken on a redish hue. I think it's a nice looking coin with no signs of a cleaning. That doesn't mean it has never been cleaned.
"Any coin this old will have some sort of toning on it." Depends on where the coin was all these years. Millions of morgans sat in bags for a long time and never toned. It is the ones that were on the outside of the pile or touched up against the canvas that gives us those nice rainbows and other toned coins we see today.
That is different, you have coins that sat for decades in the middle of a $1,000 bag of coins, without exposure to the elements. This coin: Unc, POSSIBLY dipped, but still attractive.
Let me rephrase me statement... For all practical purposes any coin this old will exhibit some form of toning. At the very least this coin has been dipped.
