Hey all just a question. Can a 1996 D dime rust? I have one that looks like heck. I will scan it later tonight, thank you for your answers and thoughts.

I suppose it could, if it contained iron. I would think, though, that with the Mint's quality-control procedures, by 1996 they should have had planchet quality pretty well set.

More likely alternatives are that it came into contact with ferrous material after minting and then rusted, it's not really rust, or it is struck on funky metal.

Would like to see pics for a better chance at a correct explanation.

All coins rust (oxidize) except for Gold... It's called toning.

    Good point, jetshack.

I assumed that the word "rust" was used in the layman's terms; that is, that it was iron oxide. You're right, though -- any toning is oxidation.

Perhaps the OP will respond with a more thorough description, or pictures.

Sorry it to me so long to get back to you all but had to abort lap top and set up the desk top. So here is the pic to my question. and thank you all.

Looks like a dug coin out of acidic soil. Yes your coin has "rusted".

Yeah, it looks like the coin has corroded from being in the soil.

I've see quite a few of these clad coins that do not do well when exposed to soil.
