Of course if most everyone switched to card then there would be little need for coins or currency so it wouldn't matter if they just sit and don't move. When you use a card it's an exact amount payment and no change or paper money is involved or needed.

This was funny. I had $529.00 in rolled up change. Headed out to visit family and figured I would take it to the bank and get folding money for my trip. I started pulling rolls of coins out of my bag and setting them on the banks counter... The ladies actually cheered. And I was afraid it would be a pain.

I'm surprised anyone would have a shortage of coins. Because where I live (Bay Area of San Francisco) most places don't take currency right now because of the current virus shutdown. Only credit / debt.

That's exactly why there is the shortage. All those places that are only taking credit/debit the change and their extra rolls are just sitting int the cash registers instead of moving around and going back to banks and such. For the places that do take cash they're basically just giving out change and never getting it back which isn't unusual, but with what's going on people aren't really bringing that that change back to banks or coinstars etc. So basically it's just a one way out the door without circling back while large amounts of change is dead in the water at stores only taking electronic payments
