    That is environmental toning caused by a reaction to chemicals or other elements. Probably was in or on the ground for awhile.

    Yes to environmental toning damage to the Cupro-Nickel clad layers..
    Here are examples frim my metal detecting finds -

    Even nickels suffer the same effect from exposure to the elements.
