I found a nickel today in my grandmother's collection (hasn't been touched in over 25 years) The nickel is a little bigger and thinner than other nickels. The Monticello was stamped over Jefferson. The monticello is on the back, but there is what looks like melted silver covering part of it. Anyone know the value, if any of this? There were also about 200 other nickels dated 1938-1948, most being 40 41 and 46. Any value in these? Update with pics: These pics were taken with a cellphone. You can barely make out the monticello over jefferson and you cannot see the words. I will take pics tomorrow that show more detail.
Yes, I will. I put the coins back where I found them and I'm waiting on my brother to send me the pics. I have been researching this for hours and can't find anything.
Ok, pics posted. Anyone have an info on this? There are words also stamped on the front, but the pic quality is poor
From the picture of the obverse You can see the image of Monticello is incuse, or stamped into Jeffersons head, this means it was put there by having another nickle placed on top and then being hit with a hammer or something to drive it into the bottom coin, the reverse shows damage because it was flattened against the table top or what ever surface it was being done on. If it was done as a mint error Monticello would be in relief, or stand out like it does on normal coins.
If circulated, all nickels from 1942-1945 with a big mintmark above monticello are 35% silver and are worth about $2. There are some semi keys, mainly 1938 S and 1939 D.
lookinng at the pics you have dont sell until you get it looked at first by a god dealer that you trust even two or three
Do you realize you were responding to a nine-year-old post? With a meaningless off-topic add on that's three years old???
