I have continued to purchase Greek coins as I can afford them & because I lack very many. This one presented itself during my usual new listings check up & I ended up buying it not too long after it was listed. I thought it was always a pretty cool and underrated type. Kelenderis, Cilicia, (440 - 400 B.C.) AR Stater O: Young man riding sideways on horse galloping left, nude, preparing to dismount, bridle in left hand on near side of horse, whip in left hand, A below before hind legs. R: Goat crouching left on solid exergue line, head turned looking back right, KEΛEN over ivy spray with leaf and berries, all in a shallow round incuse. Kelenderis (Aydincik, Turkey) mint 10.83g 20.1mm Celenderis Hoard 3 (O15/R15); SNG BnF 46; cf. BMC Cilicia p. 52, 10 (KEΛ); SNGvA 5617 (KEΛEN) Ex. Numismatik Naumann Auction 77 (5 May 2019), lot 304.
Finally, after long winter and then this pandemics we had finally proper antiques flea market (of course coins were only small part of it, mostly it was furniture, glassware, old tools, books and other stuff like this). I have bought plenty of coins from internet meanwhile, but nothing replaces good old fashioned treasure hunt from junk boxes and coin albums, going through piles of "dirt" to find few gems. So... I found Soviet 1 rouble 1968 (slightly better date), Czarist-era Russian 5 kopeks 1914 (pretty decent condition, i will slab it in NGC) and finally Estonian monetary reform medal from 1992. Happy days! The fleamarket took place around the old manor house.
It is in Estonia, Seidla manor. The wiki page in Estonian, if You want so see the pictures without antique dealers https://et.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seidla_mõis
The crowns from Malta dating to the early 1970s are some of the best modern issues out there IMO. The earlier Order of Malta coins from the 1960s are pretty cool too.
In no particular order, Just wanted to share my newest pick ups! Got another few nice pieces in international mail limbo! Hope y'all enjoy
Just picked this up from a local jewellers specialising in scrap gold. I am about to post it on Zeno - can anyone here beat them to it? Weighs 4.55gm and measures 21.5mm across. I had it tested in an Xray machine - 98.7% gold, 1.2% silver. Has a patch of silver solder on one edge and a rough - possibly broken off section - on another spot, so ex-jewellery obviously. I paid bullion for it. PS Zeno beat you all by a mile! Bukhara Tilla AH1309 = 1891, Abd Al-Ahad ruler. Now part of Uzbekistan.
I found a few things at a local coin show today. This one may be my favorite. Obverse: Crowned and bearded bust of Charles I left, XII behind head, sixth large Briots bust with stellate lace collar and double-arched crown, mintmark P, R, eye, sun CAROLVS D G MAG BR FR ET HI REX Reverse: Square-topped shield over cross moline quartering arms CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO Undated Shilling 1645, Charles I, F, Tower Mint under parliament, Group F, sixth bust, type 4.4, mintmark eye
Here are a couple of NEWPS (after what feels like a long hiatus) from a recent Heritage auction that featured coins from Doug Robins’ collection. These would/could have changed hands in New France which is why they were a part of his Canada focused collection. It was eye-awakening to see the multiples over “estimate” that many of his pieces sold for. Needless to say, proud to be the next one in line to conserve these.
Pegasi Numismatics had an auction that ended on July 7th. My 3 wins were in yesterday's mail. The first one isn't much to look at but this coin is tough in any grade. 1555 Phillip & Mary Shilling 1625 Rose Farthing of Charles I Spain - Kingdom of Aragon Billon Dinero Jaime II, 1291-1327 AD. The Phillip & Mary shilling is my favorite despite the condition. Without the damage, it's easily an $800+ coin that I picked up for less than dinner at a nice restaurant.
My most recent impulse buy. 1913A Prussia 3 Marks, 25th Anniversary of the Reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II Obverse: Reverse:
Love those birds - well done Franklin Mint. These are simple, but very well executed bird reverse designs. Nice purchase there!
Added another one to the US Minted World Coin collection. Traded a silver cert, a 2003 $2, and some random foreign currency for this and a 1902 Belgium 2 Centimes. Took over a month but it finally arrived all the way from Belgium. Sorry about the cropping on photo. didn't have the placement right so it ended up kinda weird. I am working with only one hand due to an injury. After all that here is my new 1943 Belgian Congo 2 Francs. Yea I finally got one!
Nice Job! That is one of my very favorite coins, and given the price? Wow, they need to restrike in gold!
