RE: this newly pinned "Listen Up!" post (which isn't even open to replies):

"Somebody did something wrong, but we're not going to tell you what it was, and nobody better do it again."

Say what? I sure hope whoever broke whatever rule knows what it was, because this pinned post leaves it to participants to guess whatever it is that's being talked out. It would be a lot easier to not break a rule if people knew what the rule is that was broken.

This post is open to replies, and I hope someone will.

I like you have no idea what occurred @Numisnewbiest but, we all know the rules so i dont think it really matters " which " rule was broken.
    Am i curious, yes.
    Does it matter, no.
    Move on.
    Just my thoughts.

I have no idea. I thought it might be about a recent thread in which there was some mild contention but it in the end it was conciliatory and educational. That thread is still up, so I guess it was something I missed altogether.

I'm not happy at having a wrist slap pinned to our front page. The Ancients board is so busy and many posters put a lot of effort into their writeups. A thread's time on the "front page" (where it is more likely to be seen and appreciated) is limited enough because of volume so having a scolding pinned to the top doesn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy. :(

In case anyone needs a reminder of the rules, they can be found here.

@TIF , somebody NOT from the ancients forum came here and posted an EXTREMELY political comment -- which had nothing to do with the thread in which he posted it -- about a phenomenon going on in the world today being a hoax. I and a number of others reacted with outrage and horror, posting some very sharp responses -- some of them about their family's own personal experience with said phenomenon. I admit that I called that poster a couple of G-rated names like "pinhead." I had no idea that hitting "reply," which includes the text of the rule-breaking post to which you're responding (which you've already reported for breaking the no-politics rule), is itself a breach of the rules, and condemns you as much as the original offender. I will know better in the future. We are now all being condemned equally, even though I truly don't believe the blame should fall equally on all who posted last night. Is it a breach of the rules to say that I hope this pinned post doesn't remain up permanently? Because I've certainly learned my lesson. If my taking responsibility publicly for what happened is enough to get that pinned post unpinned, I'm perfectly happy to take it, even if I get an infraction for it, and even though I have no idea what the consequences are for getting such an infraction.

In a nutshell, some rando posted their political views, was sexist and racist in their response and said COVID was phoney. They were incredibly insensitive.
I'm shocked that the mod said that person is not being held accountable. I quoted the guy while calling him out and according to the post glued to the top of our board, I'm just as guilty. My wife said she felt the mod may have his own agenda judging from his response. I won't go that far, but if these kinds of posts keep up I'll see you all on Forum... I love this group and forum but do not tolerate closed minded bigots. Are there other ancient groups anyone recommends?

As a recipient of the "Go forth and sin no more, or else" award, I learned my lesson well. Heed the rules and read them if you don't know what they are.

I have a very sour taste in my mouth as well about what happened last night. This forum has been a welcome escape for me from politics, and from the pandemic, for the last four months, as I've been largely confined to my apartment here in New York City, to an even greater extent than most people because of my age (65) and the fact that I have an autoimmune disease. I didn't appreciate this "refuge" being invaded like it was, and I'm sure that's one of the reasons I was so upset. The consequences haven't helped at all.

I'm glad I missed the thread. Sounds like it was the right move to take it down. And I don't think there's any implication from the mod that anyone was equally guilty overall. The troll was the main culprit, and if they break the rules again (which they surely will) they'll be out. The only sense in which any of our friends here were "equally guilty" was in the yes-or-no respect of having broken a rule. We all have to learn not to quote the troll. (Probably overall best to report and not to respond, so at least the thread falls off the first page. Though of course I didn't see the thread so am speaking from ignorance.)

There have been much worse trolling incidents and they get taken care of. One time in particular I felt "invaded" in exactly the way Donna describes. It was awful. But it was a tiny blip in the overall wonderfulness here. I'm thankful for our vigilant mods.

@Ryro and @DonnaML, you are both AWESOME. Please don't leave! We love you!! :shame:

You should never respond to threads that you are angry about...which, I know is easier said than done. Report threads if you have a problem. You can also ignore threads and members.

Hmmm. I missed the thread. Will keep the experience of others in mind. I'm actually a co-admin on a science-based forum where I have a number of mod duties, including deleting political discourse, new pseudoscience theories and other errant posts. We tend to delete threads that go off the rails very quickly, warn users once and then if we need to ban them, we do.

I am fortunate that I missed the thread in question. I agree with TIF on this issue, we are all functioning adults and don’t need a “warning” slapped on our forum for the rest of time.

The biggest problems by far are (1) New members usually do not read the Rules before posting. I understand, they are in a hurry, but they do not Read the rules and are immediately capable of violating them. This is also true for the B/S/T threads and advertising within posts. (2) Some feel the forum is a "Public service" complaint line for all things they see wrong in their lives. (3) Some feel "Freedom of speech " over-rides any rules ( they don't last long). (4) Some are truly off mentally.

There are limited moderators and they are spread across the world, so they are on at different times with different schedules, so not every 'report' can be answered immediately, but they can't be removed by a member and what is 'horrible ' for one is not for another.

If someone causes you a problem, ignore the person and report it. Do not argue as that is what some want, to get you offending also. to get you kicked off. We have lost some good members because they could not resist yelling back and said many things that were not right also.

Remind those pushing politics, religion, or world event opinions, that the owner , Peter Davis also has another forum, specifically for what we disallow: www.partisanlines.com, but they don't want to do so, as they scream back on that forum and we can't here.
