Got this back in change today and surprise..... another hopeful doubled die find!! I looked up the info from Wexler’s varieties that someone advised me (FROM WEXLER’S WEBPAGE- “Die Markers: Obverse: A short vertical die gouge can be found to the left of the L in LIBERTY. Reverse: A small die gouge (dot) can be found to the right of the top of the second S in STATES.”) I think I got it, but still need that reassurance or, “good job- you did it!”, or “Nope. Another MD or die deterioration!”!! So, did I find one? Finally? Anyone? Bueller? Oh for the love of copper!! 83BBDF78-C3C9-450D-B9B6-85677AEF5B71.jpeg BF2FF8B3-F434-4945-BCB9-81EF56970C99.jpeg E43452E5-47AA-4DA4-8961-95F2A58E2714.jpeg 421CD342-A772-47D3-9431-C1DCEFFB8195.jpeg B521AD76-83EE-4E60-8F59-631D1ABE3964.jpeg F4C1A481-A7A8-43AF-8032-AA760B4938DB.jpeg A647AAAD-C363-4ABE-8F24-13CF08E935C7.jpeg 518861F9-5F62-4253-99FA-A1D8E71EC099.jpeg E1597ABE-1866-465D-B782-32668EF57AB7.jpeg D7717BFC-F821-48DE-99FA-DA18E5B20BC0.png

Even after finding the markers? I was completely led to believe if the die markers were there- it was the real deal! Omg- this coin business is REALLY TOUGH! And my small town has one “Numismatist”- as he calls himself but he had never even heard of a penny missing the “fg” and couldnt answer one question for me. I need a tutor!!

It takes a very long time to learn , back when I started out there was no internet to learn from. Now even with the internet there is way too much misinformation out there making it tough for newbies. Just take your time and learn as you go.

I don't see any hub doubling. Do you have photos of the markers? Do they look exactly like the markers shown on the Wexler site? ~ Chris

I am really trying! Lol! I think I might have to say goodbye to the internet for tools- which might just be the hardest thing I’ve ever done!! Never mind the fact I’ve had 4 kids in a third world country where the mention of “epidural” was a word that had not been introduced to their language.... what-so-ever!! I guess I’m going to have to actually “hit the books”!! I don’t think I’ve done that since high school! Any recommendations?!!

I think I just posted the original Wexler photos. I can’t say that mine are exact- nowhere near a pro at any of this, lol- but from my eyes- they are pretty close!

"Close" only works for horseshoes and hand grenades, not for errors and varieties. The close-up of the vertical anomaly in your photo is too blurry and grainy for me to tell. You need to back off a bit when you take the photo. I don't see any "dot" to the right of the second "S". ~ Chris

Nope! I think you're missing the key ingredient, though. Which devices are actually doubled in the Wexler photos? Are your images the same? ~ Chris

The short answer is no...well, the long answer is also no...:D

If you look real closely at the "die gouge" @ L, although it looks similar, it is not in exactly the same spot in relation to the L. Also, regarding the dot, you can't look at your specimen & assume it's there. And then of course, there's the actual alleged doubling...which is...?

    As for:
It's actually spelled "two door"...I would recommend a Corvette! :hilarious:;)

Ugh!! Well I def notice that my pics are completely backwards! If Wexler’s “dark spots” are on the right- mine are left. If his are up, mine are down. I always just thought that maybe I was looking at the coin the wrong way! Is there actually a certain way I should be looking? Every angle seems to be misleading, as well as different lighting. Is there a school for all this or do people actually just figure it out on their own??!! Sorry for all the questions!

When you look at a photo of an actual doubled die (or any other anomaly, for that matter) you should be able to see it on your specimen from the same angle. Most photos are taken from directly overhead, but if you have to move the coin around to show it, then the chances are pretty good that you do not have the same anomaly.

Yes, there is a school. It's called the "school of hard knocks". It just takes a lot of studying authentic specimens and a lot of reading about how dies and coins are made.

As for the photographic requirements, you might want to acquire a book like Numismatic Photography, 2nd Edition by Mark Goodman. I should point out that if you are using a phone camera or one of those digital microscope cameras, the book might not help. ~Chris

Thank you for all your suggestions! It’s all starting to make a little more sense! Lol! I do use the camera on my phone and I was using one of those microscopes with the LCD screen, but I ended up seeing way too many things that weren’t even there, so I’m trying out a new one that connects to my phone and it seems to be a world of difference. Atleast for looking for all the different die markers! But thanks again!

@Momof4 ...I think you are doing just fine and your eagerness and excitement is contagious! You are improving your photography and learning a ton as you go. This is how you get better.

As stated, the coin exhibits DDD @paddyman98 ...but more importantly the wear of the letters near the rims has obliterated the doubling area if it had ever been there, probably not because the die markers don’t match locations exactly. @cpm9ball and @PlanoSteve .

Keep up the good work and keep it fun...Spark
