What's up with the date? The 8 looks repunched and both 3s have something going on. I bought this 26 years ago for my raw type set. Bowers called it EF-45. Please share your thoughts. Click on the image for a larger view.
I'm not good at Capped Bust dimes but .... A quick look has me thinking it's a JR-1. Oversized dentil on the obverse (see the dot below the 8). Die crack at 10 o'clock on the reverse (early die state becaise later it turns in a large retained cud). Rarity-3.
Very nice! I personally like it at the 45 grade - but I'm pretty sure it would get a 53 if you sent it in.
I would like to buy it as EF-45 (at 45 money) also since it is at least an AU-50. I'd say from the photo, more like AU-55.
As far as the original question, the dates were hand punched, with hand made punches....OK I know that's nothing you guys don't know......so does this date look different than other coins struck with this die?
looks like about au55 to me, too. I'm thinking that the 3 punch had a tiny bridge of metal between the knobs, leading to the appearance on the end product.
To answer the original question, and yours: it looks totally normal, and yes, 1833 had some whacky date placements and logo punches. When I see this particular obverse (which was used a bunch) I turn it over — only to be disappointed with the common reverse.
