I decided to begin a set of Shield nickels...as much as I can afford anyway. I've purchased a few already....this being the first one... 20200702_204223.jpg 20200702_204212.jpg

Nice date flake, looks like a die break, then a small 6 and a slightly bigger 6! thumbupp.gif

I have never been much of a nickel fan, but that does look like an attractive type. What about the series made you want to collect them?

As with the OP coin, you are going to see a lot of die cracks and planchet issues with these coins. The mint employees hated making them. Nickel was a tough metal to work with in the 19th century.

Enjoy building your collection of Shield Nickels as it's challenging.

For some reason this time around I wanted to stay away from all of the coins that I collected in the past...like most others who stick to the Lincolns, Jeffersons, Roosevelts and so on. I seem to be attracted to the more obsolete type coins. I have almost complete sets of 2 Cent Pieces and Three Cent Nickels... Something different I guess you could say.

Thank you!! I don't think though that I'll ever be able to afford to compete the set but I'm going to try....a few dates are very expensive

For the 79, 80 and 81 buy proofs, they are MUCH cheaper.

No matter what set anyone tries to complete there is at least one expensive coin. In some sets there are several.

I put together a set of $2.50 gold Indians. You can get decent examples for under $400, except for the 1911-D. There are 2 varieties and the cheaper one will set you back over $2000. I saved my money and bought the expensive variety.
