it's hard to believe that this piece, and the 1880 silver dollar in the previous post were worth the same amount of money in 1880, but they were at least on paper. By the time this gold dollar was minted, speculators were hoarding them because the low mintages. The mintage for this piece was 1,600 pieces. The guess is about 950 of them exist today, mostly in Choice to Gem Mint State.
Honest! I can still like mine even after seeing @robec’s. Although, that crimson and blue combination is flabbergasting. This one has some of each, too.
