Nothing to be scared of.. it's just an LRB. Emperor Julianus II is on obverse. Just remember how he was killed in battle by a javelin during war with the Persians. The reverse has a bull standing right. Struck at Antioch mint, the coin weighs 8.10 g. Exergue reads ANTDelta. I heard that local people at that time there used to worship the sun(De Mitra). Other local communities worshiped the calf(bull). I don't intend to make a debate on this. Just glad to share this coin with my coin-friends.

Like this type. Nice example, too. No bull!

I also like how Julian the Apostate is always (?) seen with a beard. Were any other late emperors similarly depicted? I can't think of any offhand. (Johannes, maybe? Dunno. All his coins I've seen are so crude that you'd be lucky to make out such details.)

The usurper Eugenius was also bearded.

Julian’s beard (also called a philosopher’s beard) was seen by some as an attempt to revive paganism and many people in Antioch did not like it. Julian wrote a long, sarcastic letter to the people of the city. This letter is commonly called Misopogon – “beard-hater”

These same people in Antioch also demonstrated against him “shouting…that his coinage had a bull and that the world was overturned.” (Socrates, Hist. Eccl. 3.17)

A great looking coin. This type is very much sought after. Here's mine from Thessalonica.

Ah, thank you. To satisfy my curiosity, I Googled up some pictures.

Wow, this siliqua is sure lovely.

As to Johannes, it seems he too wore a beard, as I suspected, but I searched for gold since his base metal coinage is so primitive.

    Found this one here.

Sorry if this strays a bit from Julian the Apostate. I just wanted to satisfy my curiosity about bearded late Roman emperors, and so went off on that tangent. I go off on tangents like that often, but they can be fun and educational.

Never seen a much bearded man than Roman usurper Laelianus. That was clear on his gold coin. Maybe he issued 2 or 3 examples only. The full name of this Emperor and his date of birth are completely unknown to History.

Beards always seem to serve as a litmus test between the in and the out. 4th century Christians were clean shaven despite the fact that Christ was regularly shown bearded. Military men could not have beards except in periods where they had to. Currently there are more men with facial hair than any time in my lifetime so I get fewer questions if I am a biker or a philosopher. For the record, I did not grow a beard when I retired from the Army. I just stopped shaving. There is a difference.

@O.T.X. I'd better keep a snake around my neck rather than hold such a beard.
