If it's in a graded holder, the only explaination is that it was dipped, not rinsed properly, and then turned this color in the holder. If a grader put it in a straight grade holder when it looked like this, that person needs to get a seeing eye dog.

You are correct, I was looking at my Franklin files, and had '53 stuck in my head, but this is the coin I intended for the GTG.

GTG? Not even. I'd pass by that coin in a nanosecond, so wouldn't care about the grade. What a pig, in my opinion.

I have quite a few Franklins, but I'm with the majority here...would not have this one...except, if the price were very right, I might use it in the rotation of my pocket pieces! ;)

I see heavy parallel scratches particularly on the obverse under that dark blackish brown “toning“.... or is that a varnish coating. Whatever, I’d pass on that coin.
    Sorry about the negativity.

I'm wondering why someone would submit a coin like this to a TPG. It's a horror, and I'm with all the other posters who indicated they wouldn't buy it no matter what.

I’m sorry, but you can’t grade that coin from those photos. There is so little light, you can’t determine wear from weak strike, toning from environmental damage, and you just can’t see the surfaces of the coin.

The range is AU Details to MS66.

My personal guess (stress the word guess) is this is a mint set toned MS65.

So I bought this more out of curiosity then anything. When I got the coin, it looked nothing like the images, and at first I thought they sent the wrong coin. In case you're wondering, I paid $8.26 ($7 plus 15%BP), shipping was negligible, as it was $5 spread over everything I bought, so maybe 50 cents? I'm glad that there are so many of you that wouldn't give this coin a second look, because that keeps the buy price down for those of us who can somewhat interpret bad photo skills. :p;)

The coin is well-toned, with oranges, reds, and blues. Here are images that show the coin what it looks like in-hand, but in all honesty, it still isn't the prettiest Franklin out there (by far), but here you go.

    (...and @Lehigh96, good guess!)

Nice buy (especially for under $9)! It definitely turned out better than the seller photo. :p

Doesn't surprise me! With that gash on the bell it should be a 64. Looks like it had a rough life. By the way...the orig. pics. were a bad match for the real coin!!!

I don't hate it, especially at that price!

My guess is that you could easily get retail price for that coin with these new set of photos. I often try to cherrypick E-Bay for bad photos, seems I have a competitor.

I really like the look of this coin, the scattered blue patina really makes for a pretty coin, and I've always loved blue toned coins.

Sorry even after seeing it in a different light i would pass...to each their own...but to my eye it has no appeal ,and hell no not anywhere near a 65.

This is a small example that shows you why PCGS is the leading the field in modern U.S. coins.

Nice pickup for what you paid. Still not the most attractive Franklin I have ever seen, but a nice cheery pick!

Not that it matters, but it wasn't bought on the Bay.

To be even considered as an MS66, one would have to see Bell Lines...and I see known on the first set of pictures on page 1 of this post. But I see, here on page two that there are lines. But they can't be broken and the eye appeal sucks. Shouldn't even be MS65!
