I have a 1901s quarter that I want to get clean, but I want to make sure that it is clean in such a way that it won't degrade the coin. I have heard that as long as the cleaning solution will not dissolve the coin over the years, it is okay to clean the coin. Is this true? Is acetone a good cleaning solution? On my 1901s quarter, there is a black smudge, which cannot be removed by soap and water, what should I do? What is the overall best way of cleaning this coin? All feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
There are several other threads about cleaning coins - check those out. But usually - it is not a good idea as it can damage the coin. As for olive oil - many believe this will work. Actually it rarely does anything. Some coins that are found in the ground - in particular ancients - and are covered with dirt and organic material - can have this material soaked off over a matter of months by using olive oil. But it by no means will remove everything on a coin. The coin you are talking about with the black smudge - is it well circulated or worn ? If so - this black smudge could be anything. It may even be natural toning and there is little that will take it off without further damaging the coin. But if the coin is in particularly good condition then it may be worth while to have it professionally conserved by a company like NCS.
Christlike, The 1901-S Barber quarter is the absolute key to the series. Any form of cleaning will only hurt its value. Follow the advice of our moderator and submit this coin to NCS for their view on any conservation that should take place.
