So im 17 and I usualy coinroll hunt pennies and nickels. Ive only found 1 indian head penny and maby 15 buffalo nickels out of my 4 boxes a week I get from the bank. When were the last years you could find indian heads and buffalo nickels as commonly as a wheat cent or 40s nickel today?
About 40 years ago, I was searching bags of 5000 wheat cents. I would find a few low grade Indians in each bag and a lot of low MS grade Wheat cents. Dealers would throw stuff like this in each bag to make it interesting for the person searching the bag.
I'm 70 and when I was a youngster, in the mid-fifties, I would very seldomly find an Indian Head Cent in my pocket change, and it was just a wee bit more common to find a Buffalo Nickel back then. Unfortunately, those days are gone.
Good question. I'm 65 and in my experience Indian cents were always quite a bit harder to find than buffalos or wheats. We used to make all purchases with cash and it used to be common to get wheats, buffs and silver in your change up until the seventies, but I don't remember ever getting an Indian head cent in change, and if I did it was worn down so bad it was worthless. But that's just my experience.
I started looking through rolls in the early 1960's, and only ever found one Indian cent. Dated Buffalos were still around.
I know that it is fun hunting but I am begging you, PLEEEEASE DO NOT FALL FOR THE CROOKS offering UNSEARCHED rolls. There isn't any. Buy them from the bank at face value and have fun. Semper Fi
I have not found a buffalo nickel while C R H in the past 10 years. Been longer than that for an Indian cent.
I am 71 and in 1958, buffalo nickels were 50% and Jeffersons were 50%. Indians were scarce then but I did get an 1811 half dollar in change, which I still have. Those were the good old days for me.
In the early 1970's I CRH'ed $40-$80 a week for several years. As a result I have thousands of LWC's, 50 or so IHC and a dozen or so civil war tokens.
I am 62 and remember getting buffalo nickels and standing liberty quarters in the mid 1960's. When silver was taken out of coins the standing liberties were gone. You get buffalo nickels in change up to the early 1970's. By the way I got a 1936 buffalo nickel in change two years ago. I've also put some low grade indians and buffalo's back in circulation with the hope some kid gets it. I've also done the same with steel cents. Young bank tellers get confused when they see a steel cent until I explain why they were made. Then I give then one to have. The only way this hobby can grow is to interest young people with the designs. Drop a bust dollar in the hand of a bank teller and watch how big their eyes get. It's fun to do. I've given old auction catalogs to young people once I see they have an interest in history. Try it!
I can't seem to get any younger kids into collecting or for that matter get any excitement from seeing something so old.. Wasn't one of the joy's of seeing a old coin's date was day dreams about the days that they were minted. No cars, just horses, flat land to where your house sits now, Presidents of the times, etc, etc.. Had a 1865 3 cent piece and all I could think of was Lincoln was probably alive then. Unless it high tech stuff and gizmo's it's seems kids just don't care, My nieces and nephews included..
I searched over 100 thousand coins and never really found anything other then minor errors like Die Chips, MAD, Die Cracks but I did found a lot of MD, DDD worthless. Now I did have 1 lucky day I had bought some coin rolls from a local convenience store and I couldn't believed what I found, I posted my fine here on CT. But never have found anything since other then my change I have gave Up CRH the rewards where to slim for me. Here's a pic of my fines on that 1 day.lol
I started collecting in the late fifties. The real thrill was that I could plug holes from change in those Whitman's albums.
Yeah ive noticed in my area atleast no one but older people collect coins and paper money. When peoples parants or grandparants leave them coins and the like they spend them. Ive had days ive gone to the bank and have goten hundred of dollars in silver certificates and redseal fives. Ive gotten silver proof halves from gas stations. Went down to a new orleans coinshow when I was 16 and I was the youngest person there.
