    jello,

I know that New Orleans' minted Morgans usually have weak strikes and get a grade boost due to this! However, due to the wear on Miss Liberty's hair and the many scratches (including friction marks) on the Obverse, I believe that it might be hard to get an AU-55 grade on the coin. Sorry but that is what I see!

    Beautiful example you have there!

My first reaction was AU. It has nice luster from what I can see.

    Thanks for sharing.

I would put it in the AU58 there's some wear on the focal areas hair on the obverse lots of bag marks and abraesions. It still has most of it;s mint luster .reverse is a little better not much. . I would say it was close to Ms60 but not quite.

My first thought was that this coin is an MS63, but looking over it, I think it has some wear on the reverse although I didn't see any on the obverse.

    AU 53

I think the coin is unc but has seen some very rough handling. It's close to being body-bag material, but if submitted I think it would get a 61.

    My first impression was AU-dipped.

I really don't see much wear in the picture...I think this coin would need to be in hand to be sure. From the pics, I don't see any luster breaks in that area but again...in hand maybe you would. This looks like a typical weak struck New Orleans minted coin to me. I agree that this coin is on the verge of being considered a problem coin because it has been so marked up...but I'd call it MS60 or so.

The O mint morgans that show any detail in the areas you marked are few and far between.

Yes that is where Morgans often show the first signs of wear, but with O mint coins they are flatly struck in those same areas.

    Exactly.
Thats why I think this one might go as high as MS-62.

    jazz,

Besides the weak strike and wear on the hair above Miss Liberty's ear, I made my assessment on the noticeable wear on all of the hairlines below Miss Liberty's crown as well as the scratches, rub and friction all over the Obverse!

I agree with Doug and think the coin is uncirculated with a typical weak O mint strike. However, I disagree about the grade. I think this coin is an MS60, the obverse is just brutally marked and scratched.

I think this would be slabbed MS61-62.... MS63 if your lucky....

This coin might get an MS63. See photo of grader below currently employed at ACG.

The joke is still funny IMO.

    Lehigh,

You should have used a picture of a monkey! It is hard to say "It looks like they've been chimpanzeeing around with the grades" much less spell it!:D

All the monkey pictures had trees and stuff in the background otherwise I would have.
