2nd amendment coin. Any info?

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by Money is Freedom, Jun 25, 2020.

  1. Sorry if I posted in wrong forum because this isn't a currency coin. Looking to purchase just for the artwork but I can't find any info on it. Anyone know how large it is? Anyone know if coin dealers would buy it or would they consider it trash? Its metal plated with 24K gold. Thanks for your help.

Why would you want that? Buy something US minted that actually has value to then be able to sell later such as a Morgan dollar or silver eagle.

Before you buy it, ask the seller for more information.

My dad got me half a dozen of these types of non currency medals, and some oversized replicas a while back. I never really liked them too much, and sold them all on eBay.

Generally would sell for MAX $10 each, usually around $7. Shipping was $3.09, so profits were really minimal.

The ones I sold were mint condition, in original capsules inside flips. This looks damaged, so value will be quite low, unfortunately.

Best case scenario you can try to trade it to a local coin shop for a couple low value buffalo nickels or something

Here's the deal, 24k plated is nothing, it's not worth anything at all. Not only will coin dealers consider it trash but most collectors on this forum would think it's trash as well. No harm, no foul, just look around more and whatever you do, don't be impatient when you're looking to buy coins! thumb.gif

He can buy whatever he wants to, other collectors don't get to decide what people like. There's a market for these and items like it and there's nothing wrong with someone spending a few bucks on something they like

I completely agree with @baseball21...don't ever let ANYONE tell you what to buy...but by all means absorb and analyze all the information you acquire or others provide on any coin you have questions on. I like buying from the U.S. Mint. In say that, there are many other reputable dealers and coin companies out there that will sell quality coins. Don't want to beat a dead horse but; "Buy the book before you buy the coin". Knowledge is power danielson...<closes hand and bows head>.

I think the last two posts are way overreacting to the responses. No one told the OP not to buy the coin, they just gave their opinions on it. The OP asked, after all. And the OP has the ability to determine whether the responses merit following or not.

You can get them straight from americanmint.com. They are $10 each (at least right now) and are a 40mm (1.5"+) coin.

Buy what interests you. There are reasons other than resale value for owning coins, something I darn sure know as a medal collector :)

Why would he want it? He said he liked the art work.

I see from your profile that you're a younger collector. This is a good learning opportunity. The OP said why he was interested and asked specific questions. Your response didn't address any of those questions. Sorry for piling on, but hopefully this makes some sense and will help in the future.

image.jpg There are a couple of opinions that are way off point. Collect what you like. This coin is collectible, but will most likely NOT provide a positive return when you sell it (not even close - unless you find the right buyer. It's minted by the American Mint. The specifics are attached.

Welcome to CT and please do collect what you enjoy. Metals may not be legal currency, but I too like the art work and might add it to my collection. Enjoy and have fun.

I am going to try and directly answer your questions.

I have no idea how big it is. I don't see any markings on it that the base metal is anything special (for example, if it was a 1oz silver round it would be roughly the size of a silver dollar). So, it could really be any size. Based on how it looks in the photo I would guess it is somewhere between a half dollar and an older Eisenhower Dollar in size. But this is just a guess.

Most people who deal or collect coins would consider this to be "trash" (your word). It's a modern privately minted token that doesn't really fall into what they deal/collect. There are people who like these things and if that's what you like than collect it...but just because it's a shiny metal disc doesn't mean it's going to appeal to coin collectors as a group and therefore it would not be of interest to dealers either.

Absolutely he can if he wants but he asked a question on a public forum and I answered him. I gave him a truthful answer and he can take what he wants from it!

Disagree. He did get a truthful answer from someone else who gave him relevant market information, you gave him an opinion

Private mints churn these sorts of medals out. Go look at eBay. They are all over the place. But I agree with those who say collect what appeals to you.

Pretty much. I would just say this...collect what you enjoy but understand there might not be much of a "value" here when it comes to resale. So, if the cost is worth the enjoyment then go for it.
