I have purchased every 1982 issue with which I am acquainted. It is my son’s birth year. In 1981, my wife and I were in the UK, visiting for the summer, as I taught in London. Soooo, this one has great sentimental value. I have been looking for the finest 50 pence proof of that year for a long time. Finally found it—-mintage of 106,800. Population of this coin is 1/0.
Beautiful piece! Your photos didn't capture the really neat color of this coin; TrueView saw it Edit - encountered on the way to the CoinFacts about this coin.
I think onr of tve hardedt things today, with photos is to determine wvat us an actual abraded after strike coin and what is part of the toning process. The only reason this coin did not get a 70 is the toning disturbance in the center of the coin. I hope your kiddo is proud of it when ylu pass it on to him.
Not as nice as the Morgandude's, and I am chicken to crack it out of the OGP to send in for grading. Quick pictures with the phone...
I realize that there may well be some little old lady in London, with a perfect 70, sitting in the original proof set, or lying inside of a velvet bag. These coins are not rare on the other side of “the pond”, but it is kind of nice to have the highest graded coin that is one of a kind, and it is the year one’s son was born. I thought that was the complete coolness of the whole thing.
That is a spectacular proof coin. The background story makes it especially meaningful. Congratulations!
