The u.s. mint sell error coins directly to the public.

Sounds to me like they want to sell the "culls" they recycle and not the errors you all have been discussing.

Anyone here should know that they wouldn't be able to go over each and every one of the coins they mint, so the errors you all are discussing would still slip through. What it sounds to me like is the off-struck errors that the mint does catch and they melt to recycle the metals. Now those are true error coins and I wouldn't have a problem with the mint marketing them, instead of melting them. :thumb:

Total agreement there and I wonder if they don't produce a few errors just to fuel the interest.

After all, wouldn't you think that facilities with the technology and "quality" control available to them would NOT make so many mistakes?

You do realize that the reason error coins have the value that they do and attract so much interest is because the mint allows so few of them to slip past quality control? If the Mint began selling the pieces that that quality control caught, the number of piece available on the market would increase a hundredfold and values would plummet likewise. Including those that were already in collectors hands before the sales began.

    mint limit

the mint can even sell all the prez dollars offered ship directly to customers. because the mint limit 500 coin for each president only. why not lifting the limit?. so it can all be buy out by the interesting customers.

I agree with Condor101 that it would undermine our error collecting hobby.

    Very best regards,

No way in how then it won't be exciting to search for erros/ I;m pretty sure that the min t prob ably do make some on purpose maybe the dramatic errors to stimulate the hobby, like bying mint sets ,and proof sets from them The statehood quarter series helped the hobby alot they also make plenty of money from doing all these things. The errors are a different species altogether lets keep it like that Jazzcoins joe:whistle:

creating your own market would be a huge mistake. We've seen how that worked out in the homeloan market.

Well put! Imagine if we were rewarded for screw-ups at work. Some of our more useless co-workers could be stars. What an evil competition this would create! I vote for the mint to become ISO sertified.

If the Mint were to sell error coins it would create a direct conflict of interest. (In other words, it would encourage them to create more errors so they could sell them and make more money.)

    error

we people are a funny bunch.

went by the clothing store and founs a suit that had one arm longer than the other. it was there just hanging on the rack. It's still there. Error.

was at the chevy car lot and there was a new chevy sitting there with three different size tires of the four. Error. It's still there.

as I passed the boat lot noticed a boat that looked different. sur enough it had no steering wheel. peddels like an airplane that turned the motor.

while at sears , in the tool section I found a screwdriver that had no screw type point. Error.
Showed it to the sales person and he put it back to return to the main company.

We are a strange bunch. We look for Error coins all the time. A toned coin brings much more than it's worth and it's dirty or eroding.

I have to say not only a few collect errors ,they are one of the hottest items in the field an abundence of collectors sre interected in errors they are more in terestuing then collecting regular coins becaus e there are so many different species out there. I'm a serious error collector that;s my opinion. But errors are hot in the coin market today without a doubt.and will be even hotter in the future. and as a great investment
